    10 Day Waiting Period

I have a question on how to calculate the day I'm allowed to pick up a handgun. From the date of purchase, can I pick it up on day 10, or do I have to wait until day 11?

For example, I bought a new S&W 686+ on March 22. Can I pick it up today (April 1) or do I have to wait until tomorrow (April 2)? The employee at the gun shop calculated it to be April 2, but I'm not sure he got it right.

The law says 10 24 hour periods. So if you bought it at 10:00 am on Mar 22 then you should be able to pick it up after 10 on April 1st. Some stores have a policy of waiting till the 11th day so their bonehead employees don't screw something up.

In any type of fight, & especially gun fights, there are no winners ..... just varying degrees of losers. The only fight you win is the one you never get into.

Thank you all for the replies. So, should I go down today and "demand" they give it to me, or just play it cool and wait till tomorrow?

I've noticed some retailers making it the 11th day because only their manager would file the dros. Stores where your seller actually enters it into the system while youre there usually tell you to come back in 10.

This 11 day crap is becoming more frequent, I am picking up a long gun today, and it is also 11 days, sux but its the way some shops play, If it were me i'd just use another shop next time, Thats what i'm gonna do.

You could but you'll most likely waste a drive down there. How about calling and asking if they made a mistake in counting the days and can you come down and get it? The time to do something about having to wait the extra day was when they told you. Now you know what to expect if you decide to buy or transfer there again.

I would say just wait for tomorrow and just use another place next time. I know the wait sucks, I am waiting to pick up my G29 on Friday @ 11:41am

Thanks again. I'll just wait till tomorrow. I didn't think to mention it while at the store... it wasn't until later I started to wonder about the true meaning of the 10 day period. I'm still a newbie when it comes to buying firearms

You don't list a location in your profile, could help others to know the name of the store before they have the same 11 day wait.

next time you buy a gun ask the sales person to wright down the exact time you can pick up your property, have them put in on the recept along with all the "other" info.

as the laws says something like 10 twenty four hour periods. so if you do all the work by say january 2 at 10:am, you should be able to get it by
                        january 12 at 10:01.

but ya some stores cover there "but" by doing a extra day.
cant really blame them with the doj breathing down there necks just itching to shut them down.

i just plan my purchers (at least try to) so the 11th day is my sat or another day off, to go and pick them up.

i do not mind to much..yes it is wrong..but whats you going to do?

That's the advice that I took, I had the person write down the date and time on the card so I would know what exact day it was. Or next time, when you buy a handgun you can check the date before you leave and if it is a 11 day wait you can bring it up then and decided what to do.

As many have posted, it is "Ten (10) 24 hour periods". Depending on which shop I use, some will just tell me my pick up is on the "11th day". Not a big deal for me....one day doesn't kill me.

Wish all customers were as understanding and friendly as you

I also don't mind if a shop does an 11 day period to cover themselves. As long as it's disclosed then there shouldn't be any problems.
