I see that S&W is offering the thumb safety on the .45 but does anyone know if it is possible to have one installed on a .40 in place of the keyed safety?

I do think a smith can install one, just cut the dead area out of the frame for its travel.

I got the 45 thumb safety, my friend got the 40 without it, both are indentical except calibers, so I think that it is not hard to install one in the 40, but I almost never use the thumb safety because I do not put one round in the chamber.Last edited by tiko; 03-30-2008, 11:27 PM.Do it yourself.Comment

The .40 and 9mm M&P's with the external safety will be released soon. The safety cannot be added after the fact. But, if you bought one with the safety, it could be removed.sigpic
