Question regarding night/fiber optic site colors

I'm looking at the Truglo TFO, with fiber optic and tritium. I've read good things about it.

I've also read that, the green tritium is the brightest. Where available, the red, orange, and yellow are less bright. Out of the three, orange is the least bright.

Not having seen it, I'm uncertain about the 3 green dots at night (or during the day for that matter). Wouldn't it be easier to quickly sight in on differentiating colors having contrasting colors between the front and rear sights?

On theory, red front and green rear would appear to be ideal, that maybe it would reduce the time to line up the sights. I am concerned about having to line up 3 green dots trying to determine proper alignment.

For an XD application, one can get yellow rear and green front, at a cost of reduced intensity in the yellow.

    1) What would be your recommendation?
    2) Is it truly an issue trying to line up 3 green dots, day or night, when comparing to contrasting colors? Or, it does not matter at all?
    3) Anything else I should know?

    Thank you.

Last time I did research on it, the most popular was a green/yellow combo. Having a different color front post can help immensely.

Also if you search on Glock Talk there are hundreds of threads on just this topic. Although you said it's for an XD the general information about the sights will be the same.

The 2-color was popular for a while, but I'll give my experience with them...

I dumped them after my 1st night shooting experience (no, for fun, not perps...)

I found the orange (yellow could be better, but whatever) was harder to pick up than the green.

In all honesty, I never had any issues with the green/green, which is what I switched back to, but I never realized it was better anyways. I can pick up the green faster. The focus difference is enough to differentiate which is which.

        My 2cents.

I'm not sold on night sights. If it's too dark to see your sights, it's likely too dark to see your target.

As much as I dislike flashlights on handguns, I would prefer 100 lumens of illumination on the target to trying to find and align little glowing dots.

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

Another point to note is that orange/yellow tritium sights have about half the life as green tritium sights have. They tend to fade quicker and only last about 5-6 years.

That's not because they fade quicker, but because they give off 1/2 the light of green... if you start 1/2 as bright it's like losing 1/2 the normal life of green.

I've got two pistols with G/G and one with G/Y. I definately prefer the G/G. The yellow is harder to find quickly compared to the much brighter G even in daylight.

I use a Trij Green/Green setup and have no problems with it. I chose it because it was much brighter in a true night situation. I have a Streamlight TLR-1 on the front too. FOR ME, i think this is the best setup.

I found the yellow to be too dim as compared to the green. With the lights out it was harder to gain focus because the dots were not the same brightness. That's the only problem about having two different colors.

I prefer a single dot for fiber optic inserts, on the front sight. Maybe it's just my eyesight, but too many glowing fiber optics bouncing around detracts from my concentration.

Not even close to true in real world situations.

There are many situations where your target will be fairly well lit while the area you're in is very dark. Think "street lights". The fact that your attacker is under one and is easy to see doesn't guarantee that you will be also. And what if the attacker is in another room that is lit while you're inside a darkened one?

Since I haven't been everywhere and experienced everything, I tend to believe that there will be situations I'm not familiar with.

Better to have them and not need them than.... you get the picture.
