Gifting a gun

What's the latest on purchasing a gun as a "gift" for someone (not a family member)

The only thing I could find on the Wiki was the following:

Is this up to date?

I'm assuming the final transfer still has to go through a FFL, with the DROS, and a 10-day holding period. What about sales tax?

Before even opening the link I immediately thought of a straw purchase.

I assume the legal way would simply be a PPT after having done all the paperwork under your name first. Of course, the recipient would still have to abide by the same rules like having a valid HSC come time to actually transfer and the firearm will go through another 10 day cycle.

It is up to date; Feds say buying as a gift is a legal act.

After that, unless it's a proper intrafamilial transfer, PPT using an FFL, as both you and edgalang note.

Is there is a specific section on the DROS application where you can indicate this as a gift, so you can eliminate any and all doubts?

Thanks again for all the info! It looks like we're just going to do a Private Party Transfer (PPT) at a local shop.
