    Recommendation.....Good 9mm Auto

Thanks up front for your input and recommentdations.

I'm mainly a S&W wheel gun owner, but did buy my wife a Glock 17 about 3 years ago and have shot it a few times. I don't know a heck of a lot about 9mm pistols, and recently bought one on impulse that just didnt' fit my hand well so I resold it. So, I thought I'd ask those who know more about these things about what I should be looking for.

I'd like to buy a full size 9mm pistol. It will mainly be used at the range, but may carry it out in the field when hunting with a rifle. I don't want nor need one with all the gadgets, but unlike the Glock, a safety would be great. I just want it to be decent quality, be reliable and be under $650 if possible.

Your input is highly appreciated. Oh, by the way, it can be new or used. It's hard right now trying to find a used one. If you know of one that you've seen for sale within 50 miles of Vacaville, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Larry

For a wheelgun guy, I'd suggest looking at DA/SA or DAO Sig.
      Ruger MkII Target .22lr
      Glock 19 Gen2 - Glock 19 Gen3 - Glock 26 9mm
      Colt Python 6" - Ruger KGP141 .357
      Glock 33 357SIG - Sig Sauer P250SC .40/357SIG
      Glock 23 - Glock 27 .40
      Glock 20 - Glock 29SF 10mm
      Desert Eagle MkVII .44
      Sig Sauer P220 - Sig Sauer P227R - Sig Sauer 1911R - Glock 30SF - S.A. 1911 Mil Spec .45

        The Answer is... Glock 19.

        Now, what was your Question?

Beretta 92FS. I won't go into it, just look it up online including here, you'll find nothing but rave reviews about it. Most of all, try and find a range that has one you can rent and shoot; you will not be disappointed...

Full sized 9mm with a safety for under $650?
I'd say Baretta or Tarus 92 FS would be my first option.
CZ 75 would fit the bill too if you can find one around.

I've had the CZ 75 and currently have the Glock 17 and the Taurus 92. Of the three, the taurus makes the nicest range gun b/c mine has a really sweet light crisp trigger along with a longer 5 inch barrel. I've shot the Barretta as well but I felt the trigger wasn't as light and I don't like the safety/decocker on the slide. I prefer it on the frame similar to the 1911's.

If you want a large, bulky pistol with a horribly placed safety that will engage if you arent careful when you rack the side, get a Beretta 92-series.

Glocks do have safeties. Three of them actually. If you follow the four rules of firearms safety, you'll never have a problem with it.

But based on your recommendations, I would suggest the S&W M&P9. They can be had with a frame-mounted manual safety, are excellent overall guns with excellent manufacturer support, and they're inexpensive.

If you're into all steel classics, try a Browning Hi-Power on for size.

I just picked up a HK P2000 9mm that I like a whole lot. Shoots like butter.

The P30 might be even better, but it isn't on the roster of firearms. Perhaps can be had via private used sale.

My safety is my trigger finger and knowing how to operate my gun safely..

As others have said, a Beretta 92FS is a great choice or, if you don't mind plastic guns, look at the Beretta Px4 Storm (yes, I like Berettas and have both of these). Both are DA/SA and have safties/decockers. Easy to field strip, easy to clean, reliable, and in your price range.

The real challenge will be finding some 9mm ammo.....

You're a S&W guy so my first thought is for you to look at the M&P 9mm or any of the 39 series Smiths.

Second thought is the usual reply; go to the LGS/range and handle them all and shoot the ones that 'fit' you the best.

9mm ammo?.... Good luck with that.

I would suggest visiting a local range and renting all the 9mms they have. Narrow down what you like or don't like and find something that fits your hand (a problem you had in the past).

It all really comes down to personal preference in the end anyway. Nearly every recommendation you are going to see in this thread is going to be based on what that poster personally likes about the 9mm they chose to buy.

CZ 75B. I think it's the best compromise between reliability, price, ergonomics, and manufacturer reputation.

                              -Ergonomic manual safety design
                              -<$650 after tax and fees
-It feels 'just right' in the hand
-Quality has been consistent, probably because the factory has always stayed in the same location
-It's the most widely issued sidearm in the world in terms of number of countries that use it
-The factory makes the best OEM 22LR adapter on the market today
