    1911 Grips

After years and years of being a firearms owner, I finally got around to buying a 1911. First of all, I cannot believe I waited so long, oh what a fool I've been.

I got myself a Kimber Custom II and absolutely love it. For the price, I don't know if a better gun can be found.

Having said that, my only area of complaint is the grips. I am on the hunt for new grips and am looking for suggestions.

So far, the only 1911 grips I have fondled that I really liked were the Wilson Combat starburst and the grips off a Sig Scorpion.

Does anyone have other suggestions? And...does anyone have spare Wilson Starbusts laying around that I could buy?

Any idea if the make the grips for a lefty, having the thumb indentation on the right and no groove on left?

VZ grips come in all shapes and sizes, and a few of their product lines are puuuurdy as hell (gators/operators come to mind if you like a more modern look). Pachmayr makes some decent looking wood grips with built-in rubber finger grooves if that's your thing. I have a set of cheap Ergo XTR thin grips (black, hard rubber) that really improved the ergonomics of my 1911 and have a nice grippy texture that help you keep a consistent grip as the gun recoils... for $15 bucks they are great range grips but aren't as pretty as some of the more expensive wood grips. If your 1911 is parkerized or blued, I personally find rosewood/walnut or another "reddish" wood to look the best, but it's all up to what you think feels and looks the best. I would recommend trying at least one set of thin grips to see if you prefer the thinner grip profile over the standard.

If you want an image printed on your grips, this company has a bunch of options and also allows you to submit a custom image on your grips, but I can't speak to the quality of the grips themselves as I've never used them: http://www.stingerpaintballdesigns.com/

Good God I'm gonna spend more in grips than I paid for my Kimber. I've already been e-mailing extensively with Larry Davidson and will be buying at least one set. Now I'm looking at VZ grips, and theres at least 2 or 3 I want to buy. I may need more 1911s. Scratch that, I DO need more 1911s.

My first Handgun I bought is a Kimber TLE, no regrets what so ever. Next thing I want to add is a 10-8 Flat Trigger and New Grips maybe something VZ or Hogue G10 not sure for now stock is fine for me.

VZ and Simonich make very nice G10 and Micarta grips that no only look great, but provide a very good grip surface. Welcome to the 1911 world! I have an early Kimber Custom that I've had for ten or more years. I'm sure I have over 20,000 rounds through this piece and it still shoots tight groups and functions with 100% reliability.

I used to use VZ grips, but then I went back to good-ole low profile cocobolo. My latest 1911 is waiting in line at a gunsmith's, so I'll probably cut and drill two pieces of something exotic, shape them to fit my hands, and then cut the checkering myself.

Before you buy look at Raasco grips. They are laminated and come in some nice colors. The checkering is also very sharp.. I have them on two of my 1911s. About $40.
