    I'm new to guns.

    Hello everyone!

I just recently got my handgun safety certificate and bought a glock 27 handgun. I have a question though, I bought it for home protection (our neighbor had a home invasion a few weeks ago) and was wondering if I am able to keep it loaded in my room on the dresser next to my bed while I sleep. I am single with no kids in the house. I live in Stockton, California and know little about in-home gun laws. I can't seem to find any on google either that addresses this question.

Yep. It's ok to keep loaded. Get a lockable pistol safe such as a gunvault to store it when you're not home however.

    Congrats on your G27!

Absolutely....You can keep a loaded gun (Or unloaded for that matter) anywhere you want in your home or property. You can even carry it openly and loaded if you felt the need/desire. (Just don't step off your property)

Also, you are going to want to take a "Home defense", "Combat Pistol" or some other class geared towards your need. Nothing like good training to back a perfect tool to get the job done right.

Did I just say a glock was a perfect tool..... wow...must need more coffee.
"The right "to carry arms in the militia for the purpose of killing game" is worthy of the mad hatter. Thus, these purposive qualifying phrases positively establish that "to bear arms" is not limited to military use." - Justice Scalia

Keep it loaded at home, lock it up when you're not at home. Be safe, and practice practice practice.

Sig226, my Glock 36 is the perfect tool in my hands. Glocks are perfect!

Thanks for all the help! I just had no real knowledge of california or county laws about loaded handguns in your home. And thanks for the grats on my g27 =) I looked at all the guns and the G27 just felt right, I also went for it due to the name and reputation the glock has.

Yeah, I plan on taking a 17 hour course at this local security company on handgun safety and sometime this year I plan on trying for my ccw permit. Although, I hear they are next to impossible in Stockton, California to obtain... I have been reading these forums and this one guy got turned down for not having a good enough cause. What causes would be good enough for a ccw permit that would allow me to obtain one other then working for a security guard company?

This is one crazy city, a lot of gangs everywhere, drug dealers on the streets, I honestly want to move but don't have the means, and when my neighbor had a home invasion 4 houses down it scared the **** out of me. I just wan't to be safe you know? I plan on going out to the shooting range in Linden some time this week, there isn't one in Stockton anymore due to an incident.

Yeah, I bought a trigger lock and the glock came with a steel cable lock so when I am away I plan on locking the gun up real tight and hiding it in my house. Thanks for the advice =)

Also take an NRA-approved safety course at a local gun club, it will help you learn more about safe use of your pistol. A lot of these classes also cover the basics on the laws regarding use of deadly force, which you need to know if self-defense is your primary use.

ETA: You beat me to it, looks like you're already planning on taking a class.

"Good cause" for a ccw in most CA (urban) counties is being well-connected politically or financially. Counties that are more rural/less populated seem to have less of an issue.

Get a flshlight or better yet a weapon's light, if you can afford it get an insight M6X ($270), it's a light/laser combo. You want the light bright enough to blind any assilant Surelife X200A/B is nice also, I just prefer the M6's. Well in your case get a nice SUrefire flashlight (just checked out the G27 and it has no light rail ;( )

Do all the mentioned above and start shooting the thing, get to know it as if it's your best pal. What kind of ammo are you thinking of?

You can leave it loaded anywhere in your home as long as you do not leave with it loaded you are ok!

not new to guns, but new to california... is it illegal to leave the gun not locked up when you leave your house? or are you guys just saying this in case of a brake in while you're not home?

I don't keep my pistol locked up, but its hidden and stowed in a way that it'd be near impossible to find.
courage is moving into danger when there is a means to escape.

                        This may also help: http://gun-deals.com/ammo.php?caliber=.40%20S%26W

Not my site, but I use it quite often to find good deals on ammo and gear.

Just sort it by cost per round and you're good to go.

Also, I wouldn't use anything but the best quality stuff for home defense. Use the ammo in the above link for plinking, but I would use a high quality hollow point for defense.

Thanks for the link and pointers! Aren't hollow point's illegal in stockton, california though?

i keep my xd next to me at night in a gun rug. i keep it loaded mag/unloaded chamber so all i have to do is rack the slide and i'm good to go.

get plenty of practice and a couple of pinky extensions for the mags and you'll be good to go. g27's are plenty accurate for "in home" ranges.

Congrats on the G27 as well. But wow, Stockton, and all you have is a G27? haha, just kidding. As long as you have a few extra loaded mags around too. Get plenty of range time in, your Glock is now your new best friend, so go mate!
