I picked up my new Ruger Mk III "Competition Target" Monday. The planned evening of shooting was forstalled by sick children (whatcha gonna do?). So After all the sneezing and coughing ones went to bed I brought my new pistol out of the safe for a bit of cleaning and familiarization.
Seeing as Ruger has decided that having guns smeared liberally with grease is the best protection for transit I figured I'd take it apart and clean it. I'm pretty handy with tools and have cleaned a few handguns in my time but Ruger was the First to say that the BEST way to disassemble their pistol is with a Hammer. I was surprised at the amount of force it took just to reseat the bolt stop pin. Especially considering that the areas they want you to hit are right next to the adjustable rear sight and inverting the gun so that the rear sight is in a wonderful position to be smashed by the heavy object you are steading the gun against. A Stack of paper plates saved my rear sight, but I won't be doing that again if I have a choice. I didn't even try to separate the top and bottom halves. How embarrassing would it be if I had to bring a new unfired Ruger to a gunsmith and say "Well I was trying to take it apart...."
I like my Ruger, It's pretty (a first for my guns) Fits my hand well and will look great with a scope (when I get around to it). The safety disclaimer is hidden on the bottom of the barrel, so you never have to see it, and it can be dryfired (At least you have to several times to get it apart!) But the magazine "safety" and Disassembly procedure are just irritating and I really don't want to have to add a rubber hammer to my gun toolbox.
Just venting, I really do like my new gun, next its the great OLL Rollercoaster!
