    1911 Frames

I'm looking into possibly building my own 1911 in 10mm Auto from scratch. The problem is that I realized any "handgun" needs to be drop tested in order to be sold in California.

Would this include stripped 1911 frames?

No, there is a letter from alison at DOJ on how it is legal to make your own handgun for personal use.

EB, this was just discussed a week ago in the thread at http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...ad.php?t=30764 where you made a similiar statement to the one I quoted above. While that statement may be strictly correct, it's only valid for handgun types that are exempt from the safe handgun testing requirements. In other words, for certain single-action revolvers and single-shot pistols. It would not be accurate for a semi-automatic handgun such as a model 1911 which this thread was originally asking about. If you have a copy of a letter stating that semi-auto pistols are legal to build I'd like to see it.

A stripped frame can't be drop tested, so you can't order a new stripped frame for shipment into California via the normal channels.

However, you can purchase a stripped frame from a private party. I purchased a new Caspian frame via a private party, face to face transfer at a So Cal gunshop. Paid for the DROS and picked up the frame 10 days later just like any other private party transfer.

The trick is finding someone willing to part with a frame. I haven't seen many out there, but they're there.
