    Is it a good 1911?

Hey everyone ! I just got myself a rock island 45 tactical wonder if it is a good gun been looking for a glock 30 but cannot find one so i ended up getting this one. Some question re this too.

    1) a recommendation on a good magazine

    2) thinking of changing the sight anyone knows a good gunsmith that can do this here in san bernardino county

    3) it is worth keepin it or just trade it for a glock 30

Any input is highly appreciated...tnx much !!!

Well I also have the RI Tactical (its a 2011 model) and love it. Whether its "good" or not is really up to whether you like to shoot it. I will say mine has been completely reliable and I am running Wilson Combat mags with the stock mag that came with it and have had no problems with either. I also have a Glock 17 and shoot them side by side at the range. I like both for different reasons but the RI is what I keep at my bedside. I would say that its absolutely worth keeping, but again only if you are enjoying the pistol, find it comfortable, etc.

With regards to the sight, the rear is not quite the same dimensions as the standard Novack sights. It has the cut but I believe its slightly smaller. There are replacements but you have to look for them. If you go onto RI's site, they actually sell an adjustable replacement. I plan to update to night sights at some point down the road but nothing yet.

I've had good luck with Checkmate 7 rounders with hybrid feed lips and MecGar 7 rounders. IMO the Wilson 47D are overpriced & overrated.

Shoot it awhile before changing it. I would prefer white dots but the ones on there are better than GI. Dunno if it's changed since I bought mine but the dovetails were not standard Novak. Extra fitting might be required.

        3) it is worth keepin it or just trade it for a glock 30

If you do the first thing you'll notice is that the "consistent" trigger the fanboiz talk about is "consistently crappy."

Shoot it awhile. Maybe you'll decide you need both!

My Tactical has been accurate and reliable, the only issues I've had have been mag related. Mine doesn't like the WC 47Ds but works flawlessly with the factory ACT mag and CMC shooting stars (haven't tried the power mags yet). Just remember not to lube the mags at all, it can cause FTFs (inertial feeds) on the last round.

Had a 2011 tactical and handled older ones. For me, Mec-gar and Chip McCormick 8 rounders worked fine.

My pistol would malfunction though - turns out the sear spring needed replacement, which I did. Good luck with it, pretty good gun for the money.

              WTB used AK MFER.

Rock Islands are made with the original G.I. Government tooling, fyi. My buddy bought one and it's a good shooter. Wilson SS mags work great.

                    1. Wilson, mec-gar, chips, metal-form,

                    2. No, but you can swap out sights with a good set of brass punches, a mallet, a vice and some files.

                    3. I would keep the RIA and buy a g30 later.

                    RIA's are great budget 1911's.

As others have said, I'd wait, since you got the "Tactical" version it comes with Novak 3 Dots anyway. I'd only chage them is you were shooting competitively or if you think you REALLY need night sights

More guns is ALWAYS the better option

I haven't fired my RIA 1911 Tactical yet but the fit and finish is very impressive and everything is made like guns I've handled that cost $300 more.

Love the trigger for a defense/"combat" gun and until the ammo craze calms down ill just be firing 50 rounds then using snap caps...

I just bought an RIA 'Tac also. I've only put about 150 rounds through it but it's been rough, with FTF, FTE, FTB, FTL on the first few 'mags. I have to admit that during the last 50 rounds the failures have gone down to almost zero, but I'm not entirely thrilled. In my amateur opinion I agree 1911's need to break in, including this one, and the 'mags that come with most 1911's including this one, are probably garbage and are probably the cause of the problems. I have a Wilson 47D, CMC and Mec-gear 'mags on the way to see if the 'mag has been my problem all along.

'OP, just don't be disappointed if your gun isn't perfect out of the gate, I'm learning that these guns need to break-in properly AND have the right 'mags, which is something only you can discover...

I don't always save the world, but when I do, it's in 24 hours or less...

I love my SA 1911, but I only use it for range purpose only. My 1911 also had many FTF when using JHP rounds so I only use Glock for my off duty carry and HD.

if you like it, then it's the best gun in the world. Be happy with it, I enjoy every gun I own.
