    P22 question

Ive had my P22 for a couple years now and recently I have noticed a huge problem with lead fouling in the barrel. Im assuming it is from the cheap ammo I have been using..Yes its even cheat by 22 standards. Any body else have the same issue? Also there is A LOT of lead in the barrel now and im having a hell of a time getting it all to come out. I shot about 300 rounds through it before I noticed that the shots were hitting about a foot below where I was aiming due to the lead build up on the topside of the barrel. Anybody have a good way to get a lot of lead out of the barrel. Ive tried solvents and brushes, but it just wont come out. Im thinking about taking a pick or awl and trying to break it all loose. I figured I would check with you guys before I go digging into it and possibly tear up the barrel. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Ouch. 1 foot?!? I know there's some really strong solvent that can get that stuff out. A lot of guys on this board vouch for it but the name eludes me. Sorry for the stupid question but do you clean your gun after every firing session? Awsome gun though! I've been wanting to get a P22 for a while. I'm looking to go w/ the 3.5" OD Green model to build up my OD Green gun collection (haha). I hope you can fix your problem. If all else fails you could try dipping the barrel in some automotive chemdip or just replacing the barrel for a new one. And try to go for better quality ammo (at least walmart grade).

      Try Sweet's 7.62 or Butch's Bore Shine

        +1 for butch's

I find it strange that your are having a problem with 22 though. I have 22's that I have never cleaned the bore and they still shoot fine. Many of the oldtimer shooters I shoot in matches with said don't clean 22's because the little built up "seasons" the bore. I'm also the kind of guy who walks out with the cheapest 22 ammo in the store. I have never heard of enough lead build up to cause a 1 foot drop or any drop for that matter.

        Good luck

Not sweets 7.62... that's good for cleaning the copper fouling but not lead. I would try the JB bore paste, or just get the lead remover cloth and cut in small patches. I shoot mostly .22 with copper wash jacket so lead fouling is not that much of a issue. Only clean my .22 pistol/rifle bore every couple thousand rounds, but clean action every time to make sure it won't jam.

Have you tried shooting some copper wash ammo through the gun? Often this will help push out the lead fouling, leaving some behind, but most of it will come out and you can just clean normally from there.

Mine would lead up real bad after rapid-fire. I started carrying a brass bore brush with me. I just brush it with Hoppes #9 and it scrubs clean. Anyone else shoot the Aguila 60 gr. sub-sonic rounds? Are they legal in CA? Seems like I have to ask that about everything now.

                P22

Yeah this started after going rapid fire on quite a few mags. Ill see if I can find some of that bore paste you guys were talking about. Where can I find these copper wash rounds? Ive never seen them before. I though about just replacing the barrel, but it was around 85 bucks, heck the gun only cost me 130. The rounds I was shooting are called "Peters" They have a remington stamp on them so i figured they would be fine, But I got em for 25 bucks for a thousand rounds. Probably more related to the ammo than anything else, as I have well over 2000 rounds of other ammo through it with no problems. I am in the habit of cleaning the barrel after every use. Maybe I should let it Season for a while after I get all this crap out. Thanks for the help guys.

                    P22

I bought it when they first came out a couple years ago. The week after I bought mine they jacked the prices up to around 180- 190. I got it from the same FFl guy ive been using here in petaluma for quite some time. It was 10% over his cost. I just got lucky and got it before the price went up. Thank for the help fellas. I post back when i get done trying to let yall know how it went.

The P22's are a bit higher now. I picked one up a month ago and it was $269 plus tax/fees. I wish I could have picked it up for $130.

I use only copper (CCI Minimag) or brass washed (Remington Golden bullets) in my P22. I get the Remington stuff from Walmart.
