I can't get my new 10-round mags past the 9th even though I've taken rounds out and put them back in several times. Anybody have any tricks/tips?

Most guns come with a cheapo magazine loader; you use this as needed until the springs get broken in till it becomes easier to load the rounds. Give it some time.
I personally use a MagLula to load my mags; comes in handy when I got a large range trip with the friends.Comment

Load mag to capacity in some method, ram into gun and let sit over night. Don't chamber one. The point's to squash the spring.
Load mag to capacity, toss in a drawer for a week.
Load and unload mag a few dozen times.
There's a DIY trim of the spring you can do, but if you're not experienced with it I wouldn't recommend it.
Call up S&W and ask them to replace the spring/follower like suggested above.
All of the above are ways I've heard of dealing with it. S&W 10 round mags apparently use the same spring/follower used in the higher capacity mags and this leads to a bit of a pain in the rear to fully load, and even then sometimes a fully loaded magazine won't load into the gun with the slide forward without some... force. Slam it home. Hard.On the Second Amendment:

BTW springs don't get softer when compressed for long periods of time. They get softer when going back and forth. My M&P40 mags were a royal pain to load in the beginning. They're much easier to load after a couple hundred cycles.
One trick is to make sure the rounds are stacking straight. You can ensure that by slapping the mag or giving it a firm tap to line up the rounds. A MagLula works wonders for those with weaker fingers
