    Sig Sauer, S&W or ?

I've been looking for a new handgun in 9mm. I was headed down the Sig road and was seriously thinking Sig Pro 2022 in 9mm. I've yet to shoot one but I liked how it felt in my hand. Then I read several reviews on them and many agreed the trigger was horrible in stock form, the main reason I'm looking to replace my current 9mm which is a Ruger P89. I originally was set on a SA/DA weapon like my Ruger but after giving it some further thought I realized I'd probably get used to something else pretty fast and it was then that I started thinking about the S&W M&P's.

I really want something with a reputation that has a somewhat lighter and shorter trigger pull from the factory. Can anyone tell me the main differences between the S&W and the Sig Sauer, along with action type pros & con's, etc? In addition, are there other brands I should be looking at? I realize that's a pretty open question but any thoughts or whatever would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    John

You can always get a aftermarket trigger on the M&P to change the pull to what you prefer, but this is not as easy on the SP2022. Unless, you plan on going to SA each time when firing the SP2022.

For reference, SP2022 is at 10# DA and 4.4# SA, versus the M&P9 which is what I believe to be at 8# (correct me if I am wrong).

My friend did not like the grittiness of his M&P9, and opted to get a Apex Trigger Kit to bring it to 5#, (https://apextactical.com/store/produ...php?pid35.html)

Other pre-cocked striker fired guns that you can also change out the triggers with to consider would be Glock and XD that comes to mind, but on a personal note I just got use to the DA pull on my P229.

      @65falconlover:
The initial double action trigger for the SP2022 is long, but smooth. The subsequent single action pull is smooth as better than many other higher-priced handguns on the market today. I highly recommend you try one before you discard it from your options list.

If you go for the M&P, a very different trigger mechanism by the way, wait until S&W puts the newer trigger upgrade direct from the factory. It's supposedly going to be like the trigger for the Shield.

      Ahhh......I love my Shield!

Can you shoot DA/SA at speed? If not, are you willing to put the time in to learn? I think that has to be one of the deciding factors. I see a lot of people at the range with Sigs, but they always shoot them in the SA mode. If you're just shooting for fun, no problem; but, if it's an SD/HD pistol, not a great idea.

Beyond that, my advice is to go rent a few guns and run a couple hundred rounds through each of them, then decide. Personally, if I could, I would try Sig, Beretta, HK, Glock, M&P, XD/XDM and CZ. I've run all of those in one caliber or another and each has its benefits and each has its detriments.

If you can find German made SP2022, you won't be disappointed!!! USA made is slightly different. I have german-it rocks! Will not trade to anything else. So far I am way better with my SP2022 then with my HK USP 9mm FS

I can't speak to the SP2022 as I do not own one and have never shot one but I own several SIG P220's , several SIG P226's and a P228 ..all German made guns and the triggers are just fine if you have been trained how to shoot.

As Jesse said above, most shooters will spend thousands on guns and never learn "how to shoot" because they "cant afford" the few hundred dollars a quality tactical handgun training class(s) will cost. The obtuse thought process of most gun owners never ceases to dismay and depress me.

That is pretty odd as I've never heard owners say anything like that...they are usually amazed at how much better the 2022 DA feels than the more expensive 226/229

Often the initial draw of the 2022 is the lower price...last I looked was ~$400...but the out of the box accuracy and smoothness of the trigger make the 2022 a hidden value of the SIG line.

There is nothing wrong with the M&P9. But it is a little more expensive...locally ~$550...and many shooters feel it needs some trigger work to really get the best out of it. I shoot one in IDPA and the Apex Tactical FSS improved the trigger dramatically (from 3" to < 1" groups)

I have owned the Sig SP2022 and I now own the M&P9. I must have got knr of the newer ones back in October. The trigger has a little travel, then a clean break. Also a clear audible and tactile reset. My Sig was 100% reliable with any ammo, easy to maintain, accurate, and is the best handgun deal going I think. You can't go wrong. I just prefer the warranty and parts support of the M&P.

the Sig Pro series is one of the few current production variants of a Sig that i've seriously considered buying. that is not a 'hidden negative' statement about current production Sigs; i simply prefer the earlier w german variants of Sig handguns. i'm not a Pro series owner, but i've shot the SP2022 9mm and it felt good in my hand, is a natural 'pointer' and the DA/SA trigger surprised me; i didn't notice grittiness in DA trigger travel, but a rather smooth delivery with clean break that was non-distracting. the SA trigger pull was crisp.

i have no history with the S&W, and have not shot one.

If you are going to get a 9mm, do not waste your money on a sig sp2022. Save your money and get the p226, a better made firearm.

My favorite 9 is my beretta 92fs. Shoots great and eats any kind of ammo and I have yet had a problem.

I've been around firearms my whole life, but only recently became a handgun owner.

I looked at an M&P, G19 and the SP2022. Like you, the Sig "felt better". Like the others said, in DA, it's a bit long, but smooth. SA is like butta.

I bought the SP2022. Personally, I like the DA/SA. I'm used seeing a hammer and decocking from my Winchester 94.

While it was about $100 cheaper at the time, it only came with 1 mag and contrast sights. So if you're on the fence, check out the total pricing.

Get the SIG. I notice you live in SoCal. You can therefore get the deals that Turners have from time to time. My brother got the SP2022 and I tell you the trigger on it is almost as sweet as the Four classic SIGS I own. He just put these http://www.topgunsupply.com/sig-grips-sigpro-large.html on the SP2022 and loves the feel. I can hardly wait for him to come and visit so I can try it out.

I've seen one sale that they had a while back where it was around $430 (I believe) and came with a free Sig lazer! I keep checking to see if they offer it again because that might help me decide!
