my first 1911 is/was a kimber raptor II from kimberman (google). the website was shady looking, but the guy has great service and the absolute lowest prices i could find. i've had no problems whatsoever with disassembling the raptor "even though" it's a series II.

Thanks for all the input, I wont be actually making the purchase till may, but I have alot more research now to do. I was looking to spend under 600, so It looks like the Kimber is going to be out of my range for now, although that Desert Warrior does look damn sexy. Anyways thanks for the feedback. Also, anyone know of a shop between Hollywood and Rancho off the 210 freeway that might have 1911s in stock? I've been to turners and Gun Runners a few times but they never seem to have any Springfields, and what does RIA stand for?
ONe more thing, Can I claim this for my signature?

While the SA GI and Milspec, or the plain jane Colt Government models are an excellent recommendation and start into the 1911 world, there are also many other makers that produce these 1911s with basic add-ons: the Kimber Custom II, Springfield Loaded, Smith and Wesson 1911 etc...
Should you choose to add the beavertail, or the extended thumb safety, or new fixed sights later on for your Milspec pistol, it'll cost more money in the long run. You'll have to get new sight cuts milled, fit the beavertail and refinish etc...
Quite honestly, I vote to go with one of the already "factory upgraded" versions of you choice, which only you can decide since they all feel and shoot differently.
It might be blasphemous to say this, but my plain jane Colt hasn't seen the light of day since I picked up a gun with the goodies on it. I did the same, got a plain jane Colt, because I bought into the whole, "everything else is just a copy" baloney. It just doesn't feel or shoot the same. While I love my Colt, the only time it comes out is when I put my Marvel .22 on top.Comment

The last Springfield Armory loaded I inspected at a gun show was just superb. The slide to frame fit and barrel/bushing fit are top notch lick a match gun, except for the trigger which was on the heavy side with minor grit. The finish was nice. If it was $150 cheaper it is a bargain compared to custom and out of the box loaded 1911 models. I ended up buying a Sig GSR TTT just because I wanted one. It is just like SA I described, but this one is stainless with the slide blackened and checkering. It is very pretty and by the looks and feel of it will be a winner. I still haven't fired it. Here is the actual gun.

I bought my Loaded on sale, it's definitely worth it. Springfield's customer service is also apparently top notch. I remember reading about a guy who was riding home on his motorcycle when his brand new (just picked up from the dealer) SS Mil Spec fell out of his backpack and onto the highway at over 60 mph. The case smashed to bits and the gun was run over several times by passing cars. By the time he was able to come back around and pick it up, his gun was a mess. He sent it to SA and they buffed out the scratches and replaced all the bent and broken parts for free.
*Update* Accident on page 3 Range report on page 16 I don't post here much, just lurk the forums because I've wanted to add a 1911 to my collection :) I decided on a Stainless Springer 1911 GI because I like it's simplicity and price. I DROS'd it 11 days ago and picked it up today... Had...

Absolutely not.
Gun shows are for ammo reloads and beef jerky. Nowadays, the odds of finding actual guns is slim (even if it is improving a touch - based on what I've seen), but the odds of finding guns you're actually considering is far less.
Visiting a few shops in your area or taking a trip a little further would be more worth your time and effort.

they have their own sub-forum on m1911.org and they stand by their products. they're made by armscor out of the phillipines (which is ironic) but don't let that deter you. if you don't mind the large roll mark on the slide you should be good to go.CRPA Lifetime MemberComment
