    M&P Question...

It looks like I have decided to buy an m&p compact to use as my carry gun to replace the revolver that I have been using, but I am trying to decide between the 9 or 40. I am a newbie to pistols since I have always owned revolvers. So I have a couple of questions:

    1. I have been told that the 40 can be converted to a 9. Is this true? If so, is it just a drop in or is fitting involved? Also who makes the best kit?

    2. If the 40 can be converted to a 9 can a 9 be converted to a 40?

    3. Would you trust a conversion kit to be used in your edc or would you just use it when at the range?

TIA for your answers. This will help decide which one I go with.

Although I have not done it, apparently it can be done in some instances. Here is a link to a video and further discussion of the matter.

Got my Shield 9mm barrel from Guns and Gear today. Now I can make the conversion of 40 to 9mm. I don't know where Guns and Gear is getting the barrels from, but I will bet it is the factory 9mm barrel. Maybe not purchased from S&W directly, but from a manufacturer of the Shield barrels. I spent...

I believe that Storm-Lake makes a conversion kit but I haven't tried it. I do know that 40S&W to 357Sig is just a barrel swap. I haven't tried the 9mm conversion so I have no idea how reliable it is but I'd check on MP-Pistol and see what experience others have.

Hello, I have a M&P9c and was wondering if I can convert up to a 40? Thanks

It is true, you can use a factory barrel and factory magazines. Storm Lake is also a trusted source.

          2. If the 40 can be converted to a 9 can a 9 be converted to a 40?
          No

For civilian concealed carry, the only thing the .40 buys you is energy wasted in over-penetration, reduced magazine capacity and harsher recoil compared to a 9mm. Top of the line 9mm ammo is as good as any .40 load so long as you are talking about a civilian "gunfight" scenario. Realistic "three round stop" probabilities are essentially identical. The .40 comes into its own only where barrier penetration is an issue.

The .40 came into existence in 1990 where expansion of 9mm loads was problematic. With the ammo available today, even the FBI would have had no interest in finding an alternative to the 9mm.

In California, they'd both hold 10 rounds. But I agree on the 9 its pretty nice. Got my wife one a month ago it it shoots amazing.( secretly its mine until I get my xdsc40) but do t tell her.

So you can go from 40 to 357 Sig? Wow! That is the first I have heard of that. Very cool. Just with telling me that I may now have my answer. That way I can have all 3 calibers on my permit.

Also thanks for referring me to the mp-pistol site!

9mm with good ammo will do everything you need for civilian concealed carry.

i have the 40c and bought a storm lake 9mm conversion, works great. You just swap out the barrels, I also bought 9mm magazines for it. The 40 can be switched to 9mm i dont think the 9 can be switched to a 40 though. Look at http://smith-wessonforum.com/ tons more info on thos subject there. People there have just bought stock 9mm barrels and swaped them instead of the storm lake with succes.
