How long can you leave a round in the chamber?

My bedside gun goes from the night stand to the safe in the morning, and from the safe to the night stand at in the evening. I have read that you shouldn't chamber a round more then 2-3 times. So I rotate through the rounds in the magazine and when all have been chamber twice I take them to the range and use them. Keeps me in practice and familiar with the round, however Home Defense stuff isn't cheap!

    1. What are the long term effects of leaving a round in the chamber?
    2. Is there a limit on how long you should leave a round in the chamber?
    3. Whats the longest you have left a round in the chamber?

    Thanks

There are no ill effects to leaving a chambered round.

You're right about constantly chambering the same round. It'll cause bullet setback in the round, so since you're rotating your rounds you're ok.

I think my carry gun has had the same round chambered going on 8 months or so.

Just make sure your chamber has no oil, etc in it otherwise it may contaminate the round after a period of time.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

I have a ruger mini 14 which spent 10 years on the bottom of a lake with a round chambered.

The action was frozen shut, the barrel was packed with crud, but it still AD'd when I disassembled the action.

Put a nice hole in my buddies garage ceiling.

          2. why do you need to keep re-chambering your rounds? you can keep the round chambered in your safe too

The Mall Ninjas will tell you that it is bad for your gun to leave a round on the chamber. But nothing bad will happen to your round/gun if you do... Just switch the round every so often..

I take the HD ammo out when I bring it to the range, and after I clean the gun I put the HD stuff back in.

I have had the same round in the chamber for about 2 months now and just wanted to make sure it was ok.

There's a back story here that I'd love to hear.

The only issue I have with leaving a round in the chamber is in my carry guns... and lint. You'd be amazed how much lint and dust collects in the nooks and crannies of a daily concealed carry piece.

IIRC it was Remington .223 commercial ammo.

I think I still have the empty casing somewhere.

Ajax, why was it at the bottom of the lake?

Like QBG said, that's a story I'd like to hear.

This is actually a non-issue with current ammunition. (length of time). It's also not much of an issue leaving rounds in the mag. I've got ar 9mm mags that have been loaded for years, the same with some Ruger and Beretta mags. The only weak springs I've ever encountered are after-market mag and they looked cheap to begin with.

I don't leave rounds in my chamber on my defense gun. I figure I'll have enough time to rack the slide in the event I need to use it.
