    S&W 36 vs Ruger SP101

I have the opportunity to purchase a snub nose Smith & Wesson Model 36 .38 Special in like new condition but I am also looking at a Ruger SP101 .357. Are they both about the same as far as quality?

In general, the Ruger will be a more rugged gun of the "rough and ready" sort while the S&W will be quite a bit more "refined." Most people find the trigger of the S&W significantly better. Also, the 36 is a blued gun where the 101 is stainless. .38 vs .357 is a bit of a non-issue since for most folks the .38Spl +P is a far more useful load than .357 in this class of gun.

Big issue between a Ruger and the J-frames is weight; the Ruger is quite a bit heavier, which can be and advantage or disadvantage depending on how you plan to use the gun.
