Single Action Revolvers and Range Etiquette??

I just got my first single action revolver (old model single six). Most (all) ranges require you to have the action open and have magazines out when handling firearms away from the firing line and during a cease fire.

What is the proper way to "open the action, unload and show clear" with a single action revo? Is hammer down sufficient or do you need to remove the cylinder as well?

By openng the gate, unloaded cylinder with (depending on model/brand) the hammer either at rest or hafl cock. If you want to take the extra step, get one of those bright colored safety chamber flag and stick it in the cylinder in line with the opened loading gate, a bright colored plastic dowel that fits in the chamber will also suffice.

IIRC, You push the button pull the cylinder pen all the way out and the cylinder comes out the left side. Turn cylinder upside down and shell should fall out.

There are plenty of SA revolvers that don't make it this easy to take the cylinder out.

To answer the originator's question, I've both seen and used SA revolvers at ranges where they had to be checked during a cease fire.

I've only ever left the loading gate open. The range master - while walking the line to inspect all of the firearms - will walk up to it, note it is single action, and rotate through each chamber to clear the gun.

It's "common" enough, and I don't think they mind doing it all too much. But because it is more of a hassle than any other gun, I make it a point to only bring out my SA revolver when I'm ready to shoot it, shoot only it, then recase it when I'm done. With luck, it only has to be inspected during a single cease fire this way.

Whoa, I've never seen or heard of these! I only have one SA revo but it might be worth it... have a link?

A nice bright orange plastic dowel or wooden dowel dipped in bright colored plastic coat will suffice. Use yellow, orange or apple green. Some rangemasters associate the red color with danger.
