S&W serial lookup..

Ok bringing this one back from the dead....

i have a older Smith and wesson, appears to be a SW 10, so model 10. Serial number is 518xx, .38 caliber. blued finish.

thanks in advance for whoever has the standard catalog and can give me some insight

also an approximate value would be swell

Yes, many have the book but it's not as easy as you might think and sometimes we're unknowingly provided with misleading info.

Where did you get that serial number from? Is it from the butt of the gun or the yoke? All model 10's have a serial # pre-fix, afaik. Very old S&W M&P's do not. Does it say 10-? on the yoke? Numeric model numbers started in approximately 1957.

Pictures of the right side of the gun showing the number of screws is also helpful as their are differences that help establish/confirm approximate dates and would also be necessary to guess at value..

so i took off the grip to get some more info...

on the inside of the wheel there is:

MOD 10-5
51843

on the bottom of the grip there is:
D388542

left side of grip also has 51843

as for right side screws we are looking at 3.

barrel says
38 s. & w. Special CTG

Thanks for providing the correct serial number from the bottom of the butt and the photo. Your revolver is from 1971.

Do you have the original grips along with the Hogue (?) grips you have on it now? Value is probably around $350 but it's not a model I collect so I could be out of touch on current values.

its funny that you mention the "right" serial number. when my dad got it from my uncle, and then registered it in his name they used the 5 digit... not the under grip

and no the hogue is all i have

I've seen that happen before too and had to have the clerk correct the DROS and 4473. Very common mistake on S&W revolvers with grips that cover the butt. But the # on the butt is the real serial number on these models.
