Does anybody know this - S&W 686 Competitor

I love this 686 Competitor with 6 shot 6" weighted barrel Performance Center revolver. I've been looking for this one or the similar one (Hunter) for years. As you know, I could buy one ONLY if the gun is in California.

I wonder if it gonna be available in CALIFORNIA in the near future?

    Like this one?

I bought this back in 2004 at a LGS, $1,100 back then. Our guys had bought out some stock from a going out of business GS and there were two of these on the Friday before I happened in on Saturday, the day after and I bought this one. WISH I had been there on Friday as I would have two of these right now. They were also in consecutive serial numbers....DANG!!! Shoulda, woulda, coulda club for sure.

I sent this particular specimen back to the factory in 2005 to fit the unfluted cylinder as I like the look and ease of cleaning.

It is sporting Hogue 'Big-butt' stocks and a Leupold/Gilmore dot sight.

It is my go to shooter most every weekend and will put a lot of rounds in the black on any given day.

That's some pure sex you just posted up. To the OP, the roster does not stop me from getting older pre lock s&w's, it is easily defeated.

S&W is very good about Rostering their guns, esp revolvers for anything beyond ultra-limited-circulation (sub-100 production) guns.

Also, these can exploit the single-action exemption if there's a participating FFL in your area: the DA sear is removed, the gun sold as an exempt single action, and then you reconvert it after pickup.

I picked one up PPT about six months ago here in Fresno - paid $950. Has the sweetest trigger imaginable on Single action. I have not put any optics on it yet, but I might some day.

I too was really interested in getting this revolver. The model shown on Smith and Wesson's site that says "New for 2012", apparently isn't going to be shipped until Spring 2013...from what people on the Smith and Wesson forums are saying.

"Has the sweetest trigger imaginable on Single action."

This is true, but I still was able to clean mine up a tad.

I would be afraid to even try! As it is I barely have to breathe on it for it to release. I swear its down under 1 lb.

                  Any hint?

I really thought about going to Nevada or Arizona, get a driver license and buy the gun, then bring it back to CA and register it.

Is it practical and legal to do ?????????????????

I sent an email to S&W asking about Rostering and thisis what I got from S&W Customer Service --- "Hello, the Performance Center models are made in limited quantity, at this time we do not have unough stock to send the model for California testing."

                    What a sad!

As for converting it into Single action, I really have no idea about how to do it.

Unless you got a job there, you might have to live there for a couple months or maybe more.

I believe that your residency would take 6 months minimally.

From what I have read on this Forum, to make a S&W SA only, you must remove and replace the hammer which has both single and double sear. Replace it with a SA only hammer. It's not a tough operation, just opening her up and fixing that part.

I dunno how it works FFL x FFL though and anything like that should prolly be discussed by someone in the know and privately.

Shooting4life has a sticky post on the top of this forum describing the work around. Basically a CA ffl can accept one of these as is from S&W, they just can legally give it to you if it's a double action revolver. They could if someone had changed it to single action only though. You need to find a ffl that will work with you on this.

Thank you guys for such useful information. I deeply appreciate it!

I read the sticky post several times and sent emails to almost all FFLs about the convertion of 686 Competitor. Only one dealer (PRK ARMS) seems they could handle the job.
