Transferring from CA to another state

I live in CA. How can I legally transfer my handgun to my son in Texas?

Send it to an FFL in Texas, your son does paperwork and pays a fee.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Even though Texas has no requirement to register a handgun? Is that to get the gun out of my name in CA?

That is to comply with Federal laws that have been in effect since 1968.

Federal laws [18 USC 922 (a)(3)&(5)] prohibits the transfer of firearms between residents of different states, unless the firearm is transferred through a FFL dealer in the recipiant's state of residence.

There is no gift or intra-familial exemption to the Federal laws.

I wasn't aware of that. Thank you!

Couldn't he just lend it to him for awhile?

The Federal exemption for loaning is for a "sporting purpose only" and there is debate that the firearm being loan has to stay in the state where the owner of the firearm resides.
