    Slide not fully closing.

    Hello all,

I went out shooting not long ago, and on my fifth mag, second round, the slide didn't close all the way.

I was curious if it could be because of how I loaded the rounds into the magazine, or even because I had magazines sitting losely in my jacket pocket that could have caused it.

Its a RIA 1911 GI, in the factory ACT mag. I know its not the spring because I sent it back to the manufacturer under warrenty for anothe rproblem and they replaced the spring.

I had my Desert Eagle 44 slide not closing all the way. I changed ammo and had the same thing occur. I then bought new slide springs from the manufacturer and life has been great since.

    Make sure you:
    1. are using ammo powerful enough and recommended by the manufacturer;
    2. have the gun well lubricated and in good repair

Could be the Ammo, are you using factory ammo or reloads?

I had this issue on like 3 of my first reloads in 9mm, AND .223...

I wasn't sizing full-length, but the OP did state that they switched ammo, to no avail...

I don't see where the OP posted saying he switched ammo.

Was it just the one round? If so it sounds like the round was out of spec. I can not think of anything to do with the mag that would cause the slide not to seat fully. Unless the mag was severely damaged to the point it was hitting the bottom of the slide.

I was using factory ammo. Magtech to be exact.

If you still have the round that would not feed, I would take the barrel out of the gun and drop that round into the chamber to confirm it fits correctly.
If not, you have found your problem.

I don't know if if this was a lead or jacketed bullet.
Lead bullets tend to be slightly wider than jacketed, if your gun has a tight chamber you may find it works fine with jacketed and not so good with lead.

It was a jacketed bullet. I took the mag out and ejected the cartridge. Topped off the mag again with the same bullet it jammed on and shot fine. I marked my magazines and I'll be keeping an eye out on that one in particular to see if the issue is isolated to the mag or if its the gun.

sorry to bump/necro my own thread, but I forgot to ask for recommendation on a recoil spring replacement should I need one.

                    Thanks.

debris or a case neck fragment stuck in the chamber?

What rating spring is the norm? I see them from 14, 16, 18lbs.

Factory standard is 16lbs on a 5" .45acp 1911. Many people run 17 or 18 lb springs to ensure reliable feeding when the pistol heats up/gets dirty, including me.

They're cheap, buy a couple different weights and see what you like.

Since it's a 1911, check the tension on the extractor. I bet it's too tight and it's dragging on the case of the round. YouTube it, there are vids on how to test the extractor tension and the adjust it. You don't need the adjustment tool either. Just put it in there and bend it like the vid says.
