    Smith and Wesson 460 help

I'm looking at getting the S&W 460 performance center with the 8" barrel. Now i shoot quite often a .44 mag with only hot hand loads and i've never had any issue with recoil. Now how does the 460 compare to super hot .44's. Is it some thing i can shoot often or would a 454 be a better option?

BTW the .44 is a SBH

S&W 460 can chamber and fire 3 different cartridges

460 magnum, 454 Casull and 45 Long Colt

You can have your cake and eat it too at each power level

      I have an 8 3/8" 460XVR.

The recoil of .460 was far less than I expected. About on par with the recoil of hot .44mag out of my 4" Mountain Gun. This is certainly more recoil than your Super Blackhawk but still not outrageous. I've personally shot over 100rds of .460 in a single range session, and only stopped because I ran out of ammo. The most fatiguing thing is that the gun is pretty darned heavy.

The one thing that .460 does have is a LOT of muzzle blast. The compensator on the 460XVR is very effective but the concussive blast from .460 is entirely different than what you get from .44mag. Shooting Hornady ammo you get enough of a fireball that your face feels like you've been standing in front of a campfire.

I've also shot .454 Casull and .45LC out of the same gun. .454 felt about the same as factory .357mag out of my 4" 686, and .45LC had less recoil than .38spl out of the same 686.

The ability to shoot 3 power levels of ammo was a big selling point on the 460XVR for me. If .460 turns out to be too much for you, you always have the option of using .454 Casull, which I doubt would be too much recoil compared to your Ruger.

I guess my comment about "depending on how much of that energy you absorb with a heavier revolver" was accurate...! This is good to hear.

I have shot the 460 many times at the Rahaugee's shooting fair the past couple years. I have to say that thing is a beast. You can feel the power of it "blow" back on your face. It really is alot more that any 44 mag I have shot. I think it would be really hard to get off all 5 shots one right after another and be able to hit anything. It seems you are used to shooting big and I am sure you could handle the power of the 460.

With that being said, it is a really fun gun. I love the option of 3 calibers in one gun. IIRC there was a recall on the 460 Performance Center.

              I have a 3.5" 460.

If you're an Angeles shooter I can let you borrow it.

I don't shoot hand loads on it (yet)... still saving up brass and waiting to buy dies.

The Hornady 460 loads that are common are SUBSTANTIALLY more recoil than the 454. They're not unbearable or painful, but you know you've shot something strong.

Every time I shoot it the firing line goes quiet and I get a crowd behind me. The flash and bang are pretty amazing. Dust gets shaken off all the wood sides and roof from the concussion, which just adds to the awe.

Here's a video of an ASR employee shooting mine:

When did they make the 3.5"? S&W's website only shows 2"3/4 (Emergency survival kit) and 5"+ right now.

They did for a while. It's a performance center piece. It looks like this:

The 460V 5" is unpleasant to shoot with .460 rounds. Also, because of the muzzle brake, the sound is deafening, even with double hearing protection. The 8" model is only slightly better.

The 12" 460XVR Hunter is a better choice than the 8" barrel. Every 460 has a muzzle brake on it except for the 12" one & the ES model. The 12" has a little more recoil, but because of the weight, it is almost enjoyable. Because of the barrel length, the round's muzzle velocity is faster than with any other model.

                    Yes, it's CA approved.

I have a 460SW BFR (by Magnum Research). It is the one with the 10.5" barrel and I have a scope on it. It is a handful but it is also a heavy gun which dampens felt recoil. I love the ability to shoot 3 different calibers out of it. I have 2 Taurus Raging Bulls in 454Casull so those serve as companion revolvers for it.

I highly recommend 460 revolvers for hunting, and fun. My BFR in 460 is zeroed at 50 yards and requires no adjustment out to 200 yards.

                          Smith and Wesson 460 help

I am a very happy owner of a 460 8-3/8". The weight and balance of the revolver perfectly buffer even the most aggressive published loads. I have used with all three calibers, 45 Colt, 454 Casull and 460 S&W. I have worked with a variety of loads and charges. The best feature is that the revolver shoots so smoothly at even the highest velocity loads. Not scary or frightening in any way. Gun feels like it is completely in control. A joy to shoot at longer range targets and hit consistently. Very accurate.
Highly recommend reloading for this round. It is exciting as new loads are being developed all the time.

I respectfully disagree with this statement.

At first I was hesitant to shoot fellow Calgunner Axewound's 460V, but once I did I had to get one. Got a great deal on a 460V + ammo from another Calgunner, microstencil.

Here's a vid of Axewound and I firing our 460Vs at Iron Sights on my pickup day. Microstencil is doing the recording. Let's just say everyone else stopped shooting when we started shaking the dust and debris loose from the ceiling. I'm on the left. You could tell Axe has had his 460 longer than I since he has better recoil control than I do.

I love my 500 to, do you think the 500 kicks more than a 460? and have you shot the 700 grain rounds?
