"One up" your Glock (Condition Zero)

If you "One up" (Condition Zero) your Glock w/ a full mag, (or even 11+1 as I do my G23"s because I like the weight and balance better) and also dry-fire a lot (which requires administratively loading and unloading a lot), here is a tip - Use the same round as your "One up" chamber round and leave the mag alone.

    - Safety-clear the weapon.
    - Lock back the slide.
    - Hand load the "One up" round into the chamber.
    - GENTLY release the slide onto the top of the round.
    - Pull the extractor out w/ your thumb or index finger until it jumps the cartridge base.
    - Push (if needed) on the back of the slide to lock the slide/Bbl. into battery.

Then insert the full mag and you are GTG.

This way, you don't have to load that last PITA round into the mag again, or repeatedly ram the same hollow-point into the feed-ramp resulting in either bullet deformation and possibly failure, or bullet set-back, resulting in "Ka-Boom".

It also negates a slam-fire. (If that even happens w/ Glocks, but in the house, it concerns me anyway)

I dry-fire one almost every day, and then always leave that Glock in Condition Zero as a ready/carry pistol, so this comes in very handy.

    Hope it does for you.

My modification on this method is to place a different round then the last one manually into the chamber. Instead of slamming the slide home and jamming the extractor over it however, I tilt the gun back and let the round slide out just barely enough to where the tip of the bullet it sitting on the feed ramp.

Then I let the slide out enough to "catch" the round and it all goes forward from there. Done right the case naturally just slips under the extractor and feeds right in. Insert mag and you're off to the races.

I've heard many armchair critics say this will damage/can break your extractor. Truth?

          FUD... sort of.

If you let the slide go and it slams the extractor into and over the case, then yes, they say that that may damage the extractor. (although a lot of old-timers do it anyway w/o issue)

The explained OP method GENTLY places the slide onto the case, and then lifts the extractor w/ a finger to get it to hop the base.

Figures. Is this method really faster than just loading it into the mag, racking, then topping off the mag? Fumbling around to get the extractor around the lip of the cartridge sounds kinda tedious..

EDIT: Just tried this on my sig, and the extractor just won't get enough clearance to go over the lip of the cartridge.. I'm pushing on the back of the extractor to get it to raise up as much as possible to get around it, but there's no way to 'gently' get the extractor around the base of the cartridge in this manner. Maybe glocks are different.

I don't ever load the mag to full capacity. (16 in a 17rnd, 9 in a 10rnd etc etc) I prefer to keep to spare mags with me instead of worrying about the last round. You should be running a reload before getting down to last round anyways.

Using this theory, Glock recommends loading the weapon the same way each time. Insert a loaded mag into the weapon and run the slide allowing the slide to strip a round off the top of the mag and into the chamber.

Last note is that I also rotate the chambered round to avoid it from being damaged from loading and unloading. And at least once a year, all of the defense ammo I keep loaded is used and replaced with new.

                      It works out really well.

                      - Remove the mag.
                      - Eject the chambered "0ne up" round onto the desk.
                      - Dry-fire.
                      - Reload the round back into the chamber.
                      - Reset the slide/Bbl. into battery.
                      - Reinsert the mag.

                      GTG.

...About as much trouble as opening a beer-can.

lot of work for 1 round

how much does an extra glock mag cost? I can't believe its cost is more then going through this procedure every time.

It's the "reset the slide/bbl. into battery that gets me, since being gentle and getting the extractor around the cartridge is much more tedious a task than opening a can of beer on my sig. I can't even manage to get the extractor over the cartridge at all, no matter how much I fumble around with it.

Sounds like it's a lot easier on a glock!

I just run one of these on my 1911, so I don't really have to worry about that extra round.
