Holster Question

I just purchased my first handgun (Sig 1911 TTT) and am thinking of getting into competition shooting. I was looking at holsters and was wondering if there is a preference between leather and plastic. Do I have to worry about scratches from the plastic holsters?

I think holsters made out of any kind of material will cause wear over time

If you worry about scratches on your gun, then competition is not for you. In competition, guns are just hammers. Plastic is the fastest. You also realize that you will be pitching your magazines on the ground in USPSA matches.

The G17 has over 80,000 rounds thru it all from a BladeTech Kydex holster. The only visible wear is on the extractor.

You may run into a problem with the Sig 1911, since they don't have a huge selection of holsters made for it. IIRC, the Sig 1911 has a different slide profile and will not fit holsters made for traditional 1911's.

I have found two different holsters that fit my gun (both are plastic). One has a push lever to release and the other you slightly twist the gun to release.

HighLander--I see your point about scratches happening, I am more worried about the preventable ones (like the "idiot scratch" from the release lever). Normal scratches just give the gun character.

Since it's a Full Size 1911, First you have to look into a Nice Belt made to hold the weight/side-arm. Pay attention to what width you want, 1.5" is standard, 1.75" is pretty hefty support. This is Vital when is comes to choosing your OWB Holster.

When it comes to holster, it's preference and unique to the user. You must do your Homework!

Run that sig hard man... Its a great gun thats meant to be shot. having said that, get a kydex holster for it. there are a few companies that line the kydex with leather too.

The best competition belts are the 1.5" Wilderness Tactical Original Instructor in 5 stitch or the CR speed belt.

I've been using www.Spetzgear.com lately for my holsters. He's a socal local, uses thicker kydex than raven or gcode, and has no problem making custom holsters.

Thank you for the site. However, I am looking at buying local (I'm in the Bay Area) and I try not to purchase over the internet (unless what I am buying is not avalible locally) because I want to support local shops in case I need them later.
