    S&W 65-3 possession question

65-3 NYSP S&W revolver in .357 has been here in CA way before the "list". It is not on the list, but I'm not clear on the list. Is it only for NEW manufacture?

So, is it ok to possess this 65-3 since it has been here prior to 1/1/2001?

    Thank you!

Yes, it's legal. The roster is only for handguns sold by an FFL, not for possession or private party transfers.

It's legal, but you have to post pics.
Never initiate force against another. That should be the underlying principle of your life. But should someone do violence to you, retaliate without hesitation, without reservation, without quarter, until you are sure that he will never wish to harm - or never be capable of harming - you or yours again.

Only NEW guns sold by an FFL, consignment and used guns do not have to be rostered.

Are you sure about used handguns? One of the reason gun shops do consignments is because they can't sell the used non-roster handguns direct to customers except to roster-exempt LEO if the gun shop owns it, or so I've been told.

My understanding is only consignment, PPT, and C&R are exempt, along with the various single action, single shot and Olympic exemptions.

            Welcome to Cal Guns..!

            All of the above and:

Thousands of us also own guns from the 60s, 70s, 80s..etc (and even before)
and some of these guns are not registered. There is no rule we have to register these guns. (for example my Stainless model 66, 4 inch or any of my Colt .45 autos, etc).

Of course if we sell a handgun, the law is we have to use an FFL and then the new owner will have the gun registered by the CDOJ thru the DROS system (via computer at the FFL). Automatically. The cost (usually paid by the buyer) is $35.

On the other hand if you move to Kalifornistan from (for instance Arizona) you have 60 days to fill out the form (Handgun importer?) and mail it to the CDOJ. Done.

There is no rifle or shotgun registration in this State until Jan. 2014, when the CDOJ will capture the make, model and serial number of all longgun transfers. But if you own a rifle or shotgun up to that date you don't have to register it to be legal.

Thanks for the welcome everyone, and here is a picture of the 65-3. The model I have is a NYSP detective issuethat came here long ago. I also have a 1006 in .40, a Browning hi-power 9mm, and a Star 30M 9mm. Only have the pic of the wheel gun right now. Sorry. :-)

S&W Model 65 3" stainless---probably one of the best smaller revolvers ever made---don't worry about the list, you're OK!
