G34 for first Glock purchase??

Would it be a bad idea to get a G34 for my first Glock? Or should I just get a G17? I'm paying $200+ extra for a 1 lbs lighter trigger with a .78 inch longer barrel, which I don't mind all that much.

I want the longer site radius for shooting, a 9mm platform, and the G17L is no longer produced according to what I read.

Main use will be range time and paper punching.

Hmm...I thought they were about a 100 more, at least at Markley's they are. For strictly range and/or competition i think you are better served by the G34. I have a G17 as well, also a nice gun, but for me, i do better at the range with the 34..

I believe the 34 is their competition model and the weight is very similar to the 17 due to the cuts they made to the slide. The other plus about the 34 is that they include the factory extended slide and magazine release.

But the only experience I've had was shooting the 17 and I'm more accurate with my 19.

Also, SummitGunbroker recieved some 17L's in stock at $579.
The 17L is still produced, just in limited quantities. And also add about $100-125 to SSE that gun, so it will be way more compared to the 17.

The frames are exactly the same, the G34 comes with a 3.5lb connector and extended slide stop. Although the slide is milled out on the G34, the gun still weighs slightly more than a G17. The G17 frame will accept the following uppers: G34,G17L,G22,G35,G24,G31

Also, GlockStore is showing Gen 3 17L available at $639.95, not as good as where B16 mentioned, but it seems they ARE in fact available.

Depends on what you want to do with it. I think the 17 and 19 are great all around guns, but if you want to shoot competition, depending on what type, you may want to get the 34. The 34 was my first Glock, and now have a 21, and will eventually have a 26, and probably both a 19 and 17.

I think you answered your own question, but still insist on getting the G34. Like some have said," the 34 is for competition." And you did not state that on your original post that you're competing.

I started with a G34! I love it and would never regret getting it over the 17.

G34. The longer sight radius makes a big difference when shooting beyond 25 yards.
