    How many magazines?

How many magazines for one handgun is enough? I know this is probably personal preference and intended use, but I wanted to get your opinions...2, 3, 7? If you found some that were really inexpensive, does this change you number?

My rule of thumb is at least 10 mags for each firearm. That may be a bit excessive for a pistol, depending on what capacity it has. I've got a big pre 2000 & 1994 ban magazine collection & even though I have high caps, I would still want as many mags as possible if I had to deal with a SHTF or EOTWAWKI situation. A good alternative is to have less standard mags & carry some extended ones. For me it's no big deal to carry 3 Glock G-18 mags & one or 2 G-17 mags to go with my G-19 or G-26. When you are not worried about CC, an extended mag is no big deal. When things go bad you can never have enough ammo in loaded mags.

I have 5. It's enough for competitions, but for general purposes I like 5 because there are 50 rnds in a box so 5 mags holds a box .. I don't like leftovers

I wouldn't buy cheap mags, but that's just me.

That's a decision you need to make.

Obviously, the cheaper the magazine, the more you can buy with X amount of $$.

            Weird post.

I'd say minimum of 3, but the more the better.

10 minimum per handgun. Like ammo, magazines have value that doesn't go away.

Once you make up your mind what platforms you will be owning and shooting, stock up on ammo and magazines.

I have dozens of .45 auto magazines and an extremely large collection (since 1987) of Glock magazines. Add in Berettas, HK USPs, AR,AK and whatever else I own.

Also magazines need proper storage and care. For instance I use magazine pouches, like this one from GLOCKSTORE.COM

It holds 5 magazines and is very handy to have 75 rounds of 10MM in a compact storage holster; I have one in my Get Home Bag.

Another good thing are extra spring and rebuild kits to keep magazines fresh.

I prefer Wolff Gunsprings in +10% power. They really help.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

Just like Oceanbob to come in here and make everyone else's posts moot.

But seriously, I agree with everyone who says 5+. Five at a minimum because it's easy with 10-round mags to load up a box of ammo and shoot it. For me, it's multiples of 5 after that.

Be careful, though - go to the range with 10 mags loaded and it's easy to blow through your entire week's ammo allowance in one sitting. Sometimes it's good to just take two mags to pace yourself.

Thanks, makes me feel like less of a nut wanting to buy a bunch of extra. Any concerns buying used if they're in good shape...is 30% less than retail price fair for used?

I say 5 plus. I will usually grab them when i find a good deal on them. I also use them to sweeten the pot when selling a firearm. Sometime the extra mags help get what you want for the gun.

I like at least 3 for those I don't shoot much or don't consider primary defense weapons. At least 5-8 for my go-to self defense handguns.
