XD in .45 or .40 your experience

I am a 1911 guy. My house goto piece for 30 years has been a Colt Commander, all my self loaders are Colt 1911's.

Given that I will loose my Commander in the Gravest Extreme, I have decided to buy a piece that I can loose and not feel bad about for the bedroom only.

Glock 21, to fat, SF so so.

Glock 35, ok.

H&K fat.

XD .40 felt great.

I have shot a Glock .40 and I have no problem with the cartridge but I am more familiar with .45 acp.

I need a 20 foot piece, not a target piece. The Glock grouped well but shot low, I assume they all will shoot low, until I tweak the sights.

If you have a XD your opinions valued and what load do you use.

+1 on the XD45. It's cheaper than the rest and probably more comfortable for you if you are a 1911 guy. Love my XD45. Keep mine loaded with the Federal HSTs. Since you have only 1911s anyway, I would suggest keeping ammo interchangeable...plus I was never big on the .40 ....

I've only shot an XD40 once and don't remember being impressed. I really like my XD45 -groups real well (even if they are 1" left), feels good, and has a relative soft recoil. Trigger isn't great, but mine isn't broken in yet (maybe 200 rounds so far). Generally, 10rds will leave a big jagged hole at 10 yds.

XD .40 5" USPSA

I'm a Sig Koolaid drinker from way back. I've always shot USPSA with my P226ST. I had it in being worked on and so I decided to give my XD Tactical .40 a run.

Best match I've ever shot. That's not saying much, as I'm not that great, but WOW!!! I was shocked.

I'm a much bigger fan of the XD now than I was before that match.

I used to have the XD45, but sold it.

It did point great and it was was very accurate.

One of the things I didn't like about it was the finish. They say melonite is the same as tennifer, but I think Glock's tennifer finish looks better and stays looking new longer.

Another thing I didn't like was the location of the slide stop lever. A couple of times when it was new the slide would lock back mid-magazine, because I had barely touched it. Aside from being annoying I would really hate for that to happen when you are under stress. I have shot many semi-auto pistols and my grip has never been an issue.

Also and probably the main reason I sold it was because one time I was on my way to the range and wanted to lube the rails before I left. Well with me being in a hurry, I didn't place my recoil spring on the barrel corectly and when I re-assembled the damn thing lock up like no tomorrow. The barrel was completely below the rails. I panicked and went to the shop i had bought it from and they said "damn, never seen that before send it back to SA." I really didn't want to send it in so I went to the range and showed the guys what I had done. Well when you work at a range you see everything and of the guys was took the XD and proceeded to beat the crap out of the back of the slide with a mallet. It finally came free and was able to be put back together the right way. Why I know that the disassembly was my fault i never really did trust it again and ended up selling it. I have also learned that this problem is actually quite frequent among the XD45 only.

I do however still own a bi-tone XD-9. It has been a great gun, although I don't shoot it that much.

Have the XD45, XD9, sold the XD40.
Have the Glock 30, 21, 23, 26.
Have the HK USP45, USP40c, P2000sk 9mm

If the Glock frame is too big, you should be ok with the XD45 and it shoots well. I am surprised the USP45 is too big for you as it is smaller than the Glock21. My home defense is the USP45 or USP40c. Both are great and allow cocked and locked if preferred or allows for decocking as I prefer. For the money if you don't want to go with a Glock, then the XD is a fine choice. Given CA 10rd law, I would think about the XD45compact.

have an XD45 4", XD93", had a XD40 4" but traded it for another rifle. looking for a Xd 357 Sig.


XDs are great, i talk all kinds of trash on glocks but i can outshoot most of my glock loving buddies with my XD. Just an all around better pistol in my hands, better ergonomics, and cheaper. I have never bought an Xd for more than 459. Just wait for a nice sale because all mine have been bought new.

I say go with the 45.

I'm no expert, but of the six semi-auto pistols I own, from 9mm to 45, the XD45 is the gun I shoot best. My wife even prefers that gun to the rest of them. I own the XD 40 also, and it's alright, but 45 just feels better.

+ 1 on the XD .45. I have it in 4" service model. It's my home defense gun. It feels good in my hands, and feels even better w/ the Hogue wrap around I put on it. I keep it loaded with Hornaday TAP.

When I take it to the range, the recoil is almost non-existent for a .45 ACP round. It groups nicely, and comes back on target easily.

If my department allowed us to, I would wear it on duty. On that note one of my SGTs bought the XD 5" in 9mm. He sent it back to SA and bought about $500 worth of upgrades. He uses his for his IDPA matches and loves it.

FFL got a .45acp in today so I was able to compare against the .40sw he already had. I like the .40 better, just slightly smaller but went with what I know and picked up the XD Service in .45acp.

Yup, I own the XD45 and love it. It is easy to maintain, groups very well and for home defense I only keep the 100 year old, accurate and proven all American round as my to go weapon. My opinion "An American gun should be loaded with the all American round". Why do you think Glocks make such crappy .45s? They were never designed to be .45s, they were designed to be 9s. And yes I know the XD is really a Croatian gun but if it has an American name behind it, its American damnit!

I had a 5" XD40. There was nothing wrong with the gun, it just was not for me.

If you have had 1911's as long you have then you must be very familar with those pistols. For defensive pistol I would put that at the top of my list.

5k rds is cracked locking block at 3K rds and it didn`t feed some

Didn`t even charge me to ship it. I also bought a 9mm conversion
Barrel for it. Its a great for saving $$ on ammo and reasonably accurate.

i believe he means that if you ever have to use a pistol in a self-defense scenario, there is a big possibility you will never see it again outside a courtroom. so your carry/defense weapon should be something you can live without, if that scenario ever happens.
