    Question: how to prove residency?

I'm turning 21 this year and I've saved up for many long years to buy my first handgun.

However, I was at Turner's the other day and noticed a sign that said that handgun sales had to have proof of CA residency by:
    1) military orders
    2) apartment lease
    3) house deed
    4) utility bill

    Here's my problem:
    1) i'm not in the military
    2) i live with my friends (go to college) and i'm not actually on the lease myself. resigning the lease to add my name would raise the rent considerably
    3) i don't own any houses
    4) my name isn't on any of the utility bills, and even if it were, my drivers license has my family's home address, not my college apartment's address

Is there anything I can do? Or do I have to wait until I get my own place?

    Any info appreciated. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you, except I had utility bills in my name during college, but after moving back home everything is in my parents' name. If you have your car registered to you, you can use your vehicle registration as proof of residency. I was also thinking about switching the phone bill into my name for a month then switching it back. Then it'd be good for 3 months.

Not free to transfer your phone bill into and out of your name, I think you should just stick with the car registration, its what i do too.

Well my car is registered to my parents, and I don't think it's free to transfer that in and out either. Any idea how much SBC would charge for the transfer? (When I spoke to them, they never mentioned any sort of charge)

Um... another thing... we don't actually have a phone. It's all very complicated. I dunno when I'm gonna get a car either. Man, why won't just the driver's license do?

Someone previously had asked about using a notarized letter from a landlord regarding residency. If your parents live in CA are willing to admit/swear an oath that you live with them, and Turner's will accept it, perhaps that would help you.

I use my proof of auto insurance. No question has ever been raised.

Auto insurance should not be accepted, if your FFL gets audited they can be in some deep doo.

A cable tv or Direct tv bill works as well... If you get a notorized letter from your landlord stating that you live at your current address and your DL matches...you are good to go - or just get your name on the lease, that way you won't be a squater anymore.

If you still lived with your parents then the notorized letter work good in that situation.

If in doubt call the DOJ, they are really nice when it comes to answering questions.

That's because there is no charge.

                          d. “Other evidence of residency as permitted by the Department of Justice” means
                          either of the following:
                          1. A government-issued (city, county, special district, state, or federal)
document, other than a California Driver License or California
Identification Card, that bears the individual’s name and current residential
                          address.
                          A. The government-issued document must be dated within three
                          months of the current date.
                          B. The residential address on the government-issued document must
                          match both of the following:
                          i. The individual’s current residential address as declared on
the Dealer’s Record of Sale (DROS) form.
ii. The individual’s address as it appears on his or her
California Driver License or California Identification Card,
or change of address attachment thereto.
                          2. A valid peace officer credential issued by a California law enforcement
agency to an active, reserve, or retired peace officer.

I guess you'd have to reregister to vote and buy a gun within three months.

What about a W2 form? That is a government issued document with my address on it. I am registered to vote, but I don't have an actual card stating such. I was really looking into where to get one, but never found an answer. Short of a C&R permit (which I was briefly considering), I don't really have any other options left except changing our phone service into my name for a while and changing it back.
