    If I were shopping for a Commander sized 1911 I'd be looking at a S&W 1911PD.

+1 on Dan Wesson. I've owned various 1911s over the years, and the only ones I shoot these days are Dan Wessons. Great quality, and the price is still reasonable.

This, I own one and love it. Although I have one with the cast frames so I got it a bit cheaper than the new ones.

I have Dan Wessons with both cast and forged frames. I'm yet to notice the difference.

              For the money, Colt 1991.

If you have money, Dan Wesson Bob Tail.

                I'd go with a Colt.

I've had two Colt Commanders, but sold them both. I've kept the CBOB though. I'd check it out for sure, even if it's a little more costly.

                        Dan Wesson Valor VBOB

Or of you're a baller, Ed Brown Kobra Carry (or even better, EB Special Forces Carry).... both bobbed.

The Springfield Champion Operators are cool too, but I'm not too crazy about the parkerized finish and no FSC. They're relatively cheap, just need to SSE it and you should be at or under $1000 OTD.

pre-80 Series Colt Commander/Combat Commander/LW Commander if you can find a good one.

If you can't then the SW1911PD or CBOB, or SSE a Colt/Talo Wiley Clapp or VBOB. However, not everyone loves the bob-tail, myself included. I also am not overly fond of stainless 1911's. YMMV. I'm old, old-school and old fashioned. I prefer blue steel or two-tone and real wood grips.

Springfield Champions aren't true Commander length pistols as they have a 4" barrel.

I agree, Dan Wesson Cbob. I bought a used '09 and I absolutely love it.

I love the slide to frame fit, tight, yet smooth

I own a Colt LW-Commander and a Dan Wesson Vbob.

The Vbob is a superior pistol but the price is much steeper on the DW than the Colt.

I would buy a DW Vbob any day of the week. It is a fantastic gun and much better than my Colt.
