Im sure alot of people have heard its bad for the gun, but i also see alot of people who will slingshot it when its empty, wouldn't this be the same thing? or really even a little bit more?

I took a class with hilton yam on duty 1911 pistols. He had us all do this ONE time to our guns, and said not to do it again. It was only a one time function test.Comment

If you really want to do it hold the trigger back. That will protect the sear. The only good reason to do it with out holding the trigger back is to check for hammer follow. It is a good practice to do it if you adjust the springs or the hammer sear engagement.
