Disassemble and follow Mssr. Elegante's advice. Bronze wool is the key. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. For the oil, I'd recommend this product....

you can also find copper wool. I would at least spray a bunch of WD40 to get the rust loosened up

Electrolosis if you dissasemble it. I have a tutorial somewhere in the gunsmithing section. This would effectivly remove the rust and leave the finish intact.

Electrolysis may strip the bluing ... It depends on a number of factors

Start with oil ... You would be surprised what will wipe off after a soak in penetrating oil

i suggest beginning with oil without the aid of abrasive action; see what you'll get off 'for free' before having to work for it.

i think the result of minimal intervention will be favorable.

I would start with CPL and the least abrasive method (a cloth first) them move up to a toothbrush and what ever you havde between that and steel wool.

Froglube and a toothbrush will make it all better... you can warm the area with a small torch lighter and it will be easier. Just be careful not to overheat anything
