    Anyone ever notice this?

So I recently bought a S&W M&P 340 for a carry gun. While dry firing it the other day I noticed that when the internal hammer drops you can see a small spark(much like that from an electric ignition lighter) shoots out of where the firing pin comes out of the frame. To be sure it wasn't just a reflection from the firing pin I tried it in total darkness and sure enough it is a slight electric spark. Any ideas to what is behind this?

Wow, never saw that before. You should try to video it and post it.

I wonder if that's because of the scandium alloy frame (small amount of scandium, like 0.5% or less in the aluminum, which the other 99.5% of what the frame is made from) and what is probably a tool steel (or other steel) firing pin? Certain metals do spark when they contact each other.

...or static charge built up by the spring compressing over the firing pin or something?... I have no idea ...but +1 on getting a video of it!...

BTW I just did a google search for 'firing pin spark.' Most results were on the S&W forum RE revolvers!

I was dry firing my new M&P 340 with plastic snap caps and noticed something very odd. Sometimes there is a small spark between the blast shield and the back of the cylinder. It appears to be coming out of the firing pin tunnel. I have disassembled the gun except for the cylinder and the...

Someone over at Glock Talk just posted a thread about this and I tested my 642 and low and behold, I'm getting a spark every now and again when I pull the trigger (unloaded of course,LOL) coming from the firing pin hole. I'm thinking that it's just a hardened firing pin hitting against the...

Apparent answer from S&W. I was sort of close:

Titanium firing pin going through steel firing pin bushing.

Seriously, I have never seen a spark coming from dry firing a gun. Video is a must.

reminds me of (many) years ago... I had a derringer lighter - coolest thing ever! Got it some minor issue with the law (don't even remember what it was) and they took it *it was in my pocket, had nothing to do with why I was questioned... I wish I could remember what the hell it was though...

Anyway- OP, find a way to ignite from the spark and make a lighter out of it
