Apparently we're the only two people that seem to understand that this post isn't about "doing what's legal" - it's about the fact that all the paperwork in the world won't catch people who potentially could be doing things that are totally illegal.

So yeah, while the scenario previously described is illegal - the burden of all the paperwork fails to catch or prevent any of that from happening and is thus a pointless endeavor...

Buy hey - if all the expense and trouble the paperwork causes helps just one liberal gun-grabber sleep a little better, then it's all worthwhile.

^^^ it's just good to know all bases in the event that the firearm is used in self defense (that's my purpose anyway)...

If it's a range only gun or safe queen, then no biggie... but if it's used in self defense, I imagine all kinds of things that you would never really think of will be brought up in court.

Sure, pleading the fifth and letting you lawyer do the talking is one angle... but like competition fighting - never leave it in the hands of the judges (or jury in this case).

having an unregistered gun with questionable origins (however technically legal it may be) - is not going over well in front of a CA jury.

Since this was brought up again.

It's true there is nothing in the system that checks.

But, if the firearm is ever used in a crime/found/checked by LE, then the chain of ownership will be checked by BATFE.

        For example...
        Person A commits a murder-suicide.
        LE investigates.
Person A bought handgun cash & carry from Person B (felon)
Person B bought handgun cash & carry from Person C.
Person C bought handgun from FFL dealer (4473/NICS).
Both, Person B and Person C were charged with felonies.
Person B = prohibited person in possession of firearm
Person C = selling firearm to a prohibited person.
Above example occured in 2009 in TN, murder-suicide victim was former NFL QB Steve McNair.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe at this point there would be no way to get a non registered handgun legally.

In the case of a intrafamilial transfer (in state) you are supposed to fill out a form and send it in with $19, that I believe transfers to a registration. In a state to state version you are required to go through a FFL, there is your registration right there.

In the case of an inheritance you have 30 days to act as an "agent" to sell the guns, after 30 days you are required to fill out paperwork that I believe would go to registration.

If moving in from out of state, declare the firearms and that would go to registration.

So I believe (could be wrong on one of those or missed something) that the only way to have a non registered handgun is if you owned it prior to the introduction of handgun registration here in CA.

With that said, if you are in possession of a pistol that is not registered and was manufactured after the introduction of handgun registration then something illegal had to happen for you to have possession of said firearm.

There is no requirement to register firearm(s) that you have made for personal use.

Right but you also cant sell them and that defeats the purpose of this thread.
