    ak47 pistol mag lock question

do i need one? if it's no longer a rifle it shouldnt be subject to rifle magazine lock laws...i've been looking for my answer for awhile and i've seen pics of CA ak pistols with and without them...and im not worried about the "do it just to be safe" train of thought...do i have to have one or not? thanks

The magazine is outside the pistol grip. You need one, per the flow-chart.

The others are correct, magazine located outside the pistol grip on a semi automatic pistol in CA needs a magazine lock.

        See the flow chart:

What do you mean no longer a rifle?
You can not legally convert a rifle into a pistol.
I'm guessing you just worded that poorly and did not actually convert a rifle to a pistol? Right?
Unless you mean you built it on a fresh receiver that was never a rifle..

        Edited to add CA PC:
12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
        [...]
        (4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
        (A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
        (B) A second handgrip.
        (C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
        (D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
        (5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.

CA's assault weapons laws for rifles are different than those for handguns and for shotguns.

Under CA's assault weapons laws for handguns, a maglock and a 10 round or less magazine is required no matter how a centerfire semi-auto pistol, that uses a magazine outside of it's pistol grip, is configured.

You definatly need a mag lock in ca. I have a ak47 krinkov pistol. Trust me. Do not get one without the mag lock. Its not worth the trouble.

What if your mag IS your pistol grip? (No other grip)

Any handgun that uses a mag outside the grip needs a mag lock, rimfire pistols are not exempt unless it's on the approved olympic pistol list.

For the guy who asked about the mag being the grip. Write a letter to the DOJ and ask for an opinion in writing.
