    1911 disconnector problem?

Hi all. I have a ria tactical 1911. When at the range whilst doing double taps ive had 2 or 3 failure to fires. When looking at the gun the hammer is in quarter cock. The round in the chamber is pristine with no indication of any sort of primer strike. Unloaded it and charged the slide and slowly let the slide forward. While the slide was very slowly going forward i was repeadly pulling the trigger. I can make the hammer drop enough out of battery that the hammer will drop into the quarter cock position. So question is "is this a disconnector problem?" Allowing me to somehow pull the trigger at the right time allowing the hammer to drop enough out of battery that the hammer locks into quarter cock. Any help or insight would be much apperciated.

Lol yea. "Half cocked" i called it quarter cocked because it seems half of the standard half cock.

Do you have a adjustable trigger? I have a SA EMP the screw in the trigger some how worked its way in and I was shooting it one day and I started haveing some light strikes and then it just would not fire at all. I got home and first cleaned it then started checking it out when I found out that it was the trigger screw.

It sounds like a disconnector problem to me; contact RIA and get a shipping label and have them inspect the fire control group and fix it; it's potentially a very unsafe condition.

For those interested, http://www.m1911.org/technic25.htm has a function check page for 1911's.

The disconnector works by moving up and down into a corresponding cut in the underside of the slide. Remove the slide and turn it upside down, place it next to the frame. You'll see how the cut in the slide and the disconnector being "up" roughly coincide with the slide being in full battery.

You can test the disconnector with the slide off. With it up the trigger should drop, press it down and the trigger should remain at full cock. Control the hammer with your thumb so it doesn't actually drop full force.

FWIW my first thought was that the hammer is dropping off the full cock notch when the slide goes into battery.

Yep same thought here, but I'm still trying to wake up.

Would that also cause the gun to fire out of battery? Because like i said i can slowly release the slide and get the hammer to drop enough out of barrery that the hammer strikes the slide and stops in "half cock". Although the "half cock" is more like a "quarter cock"

To fire out of battery, usually the slide needs to be closed enough for the hammer to strike the firing pin....this means the slide needs to be almost fully forward.

There is a little play in the disconnect system - how far out of battery can this happen.

Enough for the hammer to drop and hit the slide and lock into "half cock" without striking the firing pin. The barrel is not locked locked up. The slide will be back like 3/16 of an inch.

Sounds like the sear is not fully engaging the full cock notch in the hammer.
This could be something as simple as the sear spring not having enough tension.

Is that common in a new gun. I only have 150 rounds through it. I have tried to duplicate the problem by hand. When the hammer is down then charge the slide and dry fire it there is no problem. However, when i charge the gun and try to duplicate my fast double tape i can create the problem of chambering round and hammer coming forward to the half cock. Could it be that I am sometimes pulling the trigger for my follow up shot when the disconnector is in the position that allows the hammer to drop from full cock and the hammer strike slide before in full battery and stopping in half cock? I dont know. Like i said. I can slowly ride the slide forward while repeatedly pull the trigger and get the hammer to fall before complete lock up with the result of hammer stopping in half cock

I assume you mean manually, quickly cycling the slide.
Yes, if you don't get the pressure off the trigger to allow it to reset it will do this.
Also, if you are not getting the slide all the way back so the hammer cocks fully it will do this.

Ok. Is this the disconnector? I charge the slide. Holding the slide i very slowly ride the slide forward. While riding the slide forward i repeatedly pull the trigger. The trigger will engage before the slide is in full battery. The trigger engages and drops the hammer. The slide is still back far enough that the hammer strikes the back of the slide. The slide is back far enough that the hammer is stopped at the half cock position by the slide still being far back. Im thinking the disco is too short....?
