sight replacement on a hardchromed 1911

I have a hard chromed 1911 including the GI sights and I would like to replace them with something bigger. Now the question is when I get the sights replaced do I need to re-chrome the slide?

If you change the sights from the GI spec to, say, Novaks, then you will need to make a dovetail (front) and Novak spec (rear) cut.

You will need to refinish the slide after those cuts are made.

If you get sights that fit the existing cut then you will not have to have it hard chromed again. The new sights are just drifted in and staked in the front.
