New and need some advice

I will preface my post by appologizing if I haven't found the proper location to ask this question. But by the responses to other threads, it seems you guys are the best to ask.

I just moved to California from Kansas City, MO. Guns are pretty much like water there, everyone has some and you carry it around. My grandma has her C&C as does the rest of my family.

My father passed away and left me (his daughter) the guns him and I used to shoot.

So,of the collection, I'd like too bring the fully tactical russian AK-47 and the glock 19 out to Cali. That said, I'm not exactly sure what all I would need to do and if they would qualify for the interfamily thing. Sorry I'm a tad clueless but if someone can break it down for a blonde chick thats a pretty decent shot in non-legal language I would really apperciate it.

I know how to handle the gun, I'm not crazy so shouldn't have a problem with background clearances (have security with the goverment thats rather high for my day job) and just want to go shoot at a range ( not that the govt really cares much about intent).

If I could get a C&C here in Cali that would be great but I hear its typically reserved for active/former military or public forces. I wouldn't mind having one in the H1 when I take random roadtrips. Kinda feel like a sitting duck in a truck like that being a chick and alone.

Welcome! you can bring them here if your moving to california, but you will need to install a maglock on that AK if it doesnt already have one (there are some exceptions to this, check the flow chart at the top of the thread to see if your rifle doesnt need one)

You cannot import standard capacity magazines either, although they are legal to possess. If i missed anything im sure someone else will chime in

Bunch of concepts mixed together there - no problem, CA doesn't make things easy.

1) If you were a CA resident, and then, sadly, your dad passed on, you're covered - Feds say no FFL needed, so you can go back to KS and get the guns.

2) If the passing was before you moved, then there's no issue about it - how you got gun before you get to CA is not CA's business.

3) See the wiki -- http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Mo..._with_firearms -- for details, but Dark Mod got the highlights - no magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, and have to mod the AK for California's 'assault weapon' laws.

4) California calls "C&C" "License to Carry", or LTC. Qualification has no logical basis; primary consideration is what county you will live in.

Do you happen to know the make and model stamped on your AK?
Also, does it have a solid buttstock, collapsible (M4 type) stock or a side folding (AK type) stock?
Just curious for legal reasons.

As mentioned, leave ANY magazines over ten rounds back home and if your AK is otherwise legal, simply get an AK magazine lock.

I dont know the stamp on the AK. I just know its a pretty nice Russian one. And it's a few thousand miles away right now or I'd take a peek.

As for the stock, it's collapsible. It doesn't fold but is the kind that extends from a single tube to lock out as different distances but also can collapse down to flush with the back of the gun. so sounds like the M4 style. ?

I think the mags we have for it far exceed the 10 count. In fact I think even the mags for the glock carry more than 10 ( maybe 12 ). Does the count only pertain to assault rifles?

As for the LTC, can anyone suggest a decent place to get theirs in northern cali? I'm in Monterey, so not sure how that will go over with the yuppy crowd ( take it with a grain of salt any monterey folks, I'm out here too )

Guys, thanks again for the help. It sounds like I'll be able to even have my mom bring the guns out at Thanksgiving. Gonna have to brush up on my shot, it's been awhile. Wish I could bring out the Seiga with the 20 barrel clip. That is a fun gun to shoot.

I assume there are some restrictions on the ammunition as well. Self defense bullets vs. hollow tip. vs. FMJ vs. liquid expansion bullets. Just need to know what to bring out.

Make sure your AK-47 complies with the flowchart and you're good to go. The link to the flowchart can be found here.

Regarding your Glock 19, read the wiki about moving to California with guns and it'll give you a good understanding of what needs to be done. The link to the wiki is here and then scroll down to the section where it talk about handguns.

Your Saiga-12 shotgun is a no go with collapsible stock AND pistol grip or forward grip, even if you get the magazine lock.
You'll need to put a fixed stock on it to keep the pistol/forward grips. You need to put a magazine lock on it either way.
And only ten rounds for ANY gun.
All ammo is legal except rifle and pistol tracer or incendiary ammo. Armor piercing handgun ammo is also not legal, but I doubt you could find that if you tried.


1. Get magazine locks for the rifles and Saiga shotgun http://www.riflegear.com/c-15-california-legal.aspx

2. Get 10 round magazines.

3. Get a fixed butt stock for the Saiga shotgun.

4. Do the handgun new resident form I linked above.

^^^^ Some counties in CA will issue them, some will not.
Orange County and Los Angeles County are extremely unlikely to issue a CCW permit. You must be very connected someone very important.
Riverside County and San Bernadino County are possible.
I am not familiar with the policies of other counties in CA.
You must apply for the CCW permit with the County in which you reside.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

If you're in a slight rush on getting the AK moved with you back here to CA, you could in theory take the major components apart and therefore make it a nonfunctional firearm until you're able to determine what modifications are needed to make it legal here in the state. Magazines holding more than 10 rounds can't be brought into the state BUT you can take them apart and use them as a rebuild kit in case some magazine you buy here breaks.
(Someone correct me if I'm wrong here in my logic).

A few members already pointed out, you just need to make sure the overall length meets the "Flowcharts & OLL Assembly Guide" requirement and there needs to be a bullet button installed (a local gun shop could easily do the latter for you and i'm sure even show you how to do it if you ask nicely).

The MAIN thing though is that the AK's receiver isn't stamped with the non-compliant companies listed in the flow chart - if it is, you can't do anything about this, CA just doesn't allow receivers stamped with those markings into the state and you may as well part out the AK or take all the other pieces to make a new one here in CA.

She should be able to bring mag repair kits to CA, right? You never know she can magically find 30 round AK mags which by CA law is legal, then the repair kits can come in handy.

To make it sample you might just want to list out the configuration you have on your weapons and guys here can give you pointers on how to make each of of them CA legal.

Welcome to California. If you are in the San Francisco area I think you can forget about getting a LTC.
