    Llama 1911

    I have an opportunity to buy a Commander sized Llama 1911 45 for $300. Its marked "Minimax 45". I believe there calling it a compact, not a sub-compact. Magazine is 6 rounds. Its in nice shape. Thought I could use it as a platform for a custom carry. Are aftermarket parts like sights, amdie safeties, beaver tail grip safeties, match barrels etc usable on this gun? I do some metal work and thought I'd try "melting" it and installing some kool stuff on it. Opinions?

    On a budget, for a few dollars more, you can have a better pistol. In the realm of 1911's, you definitely get what you pay for. Minimum, I'd go with RIA.

      It belonged to a good friend who needs money. I say "belonged" because I just called him and told him to bring it over and get his money. It's cheap enough and I'm helping a friend so I'll see what i can do with it. If I screw it up.....no big loss. The "melting" part is what I'm looking forward to. Start with a set of ignition files to remove the Sharp. Then a stone to clean it up. Then a polishing wheel and some rouge. Then some aftermarket goodies and off to a smith to do the real machine work for some good sights and a trigger job. Then a refinish and Poof!!! A diamond in a goats a**!!!

          I'm sure you mis spoke here.

          What you MEANT to say was you just called him and told him to come over and get the money, and you two will go to an FFL and transfer it legally in the morning.

              llama is acctually a quite acceptabe weapon, but sometimes finiky as regards to ammo.... approximate value... nib $325 exc $275.....add$40 for satin chrome, $60 for stainless, $20 for duo-tone finish...... i would consider it....

                My 1st 1911 was a LLama IX that I bought at Turners on sale for $159 back in 1980 (ish) Actually it was a well made and great finished gun. It was a good shooter as well. It was a blued model with a vent upper rib and wood grips. Unfortunatly it was stolen from my Car. Dumb move leaving it there. I say you made a good purchase...go have fun with it!

                  My dad has a Llama Model Ix, and some of the parts are 1911, but not all.

                  From what I recall, grips were different hole spacing, slide stop had different diameter; I was able to mount/fit a Wilson Combat ambi-safety (he's a lefty).

                  Don't remember much else beyond it was decent enough to shoot, but definitely needed the melting of which you speak.

                    I still have my Llama Ix and it's still a good shooting 45.
                    Over on the 1911 board there is a list of parts that are compatible between the Llama and the mil spec 45's. Most parts will fit with minor work, some don't.

                      Can you recall where I would look on the 1911 board for that list? Thanks

                        Found this. Post pics when ready.
                        The question comes up often, what standard 1911 parts can be used in a Llama or Firestorm pistol. The following is taken directly from the Bersa-Llama (Import Sports) web site. I do not vouch for the accuracy of the information provided. ------------------------------------------------------ COLT 1911 Parts Compatibility List The following after-market 1911 parts will work on the Llama Max I 45 L/F and C/F, Llama Max II IX-C and IX-D, MiniMax, MiniMax II and MiniMax Sub-Compact;

                          Fiddling about, learning, etc. Yeah... how far wrong can ya go for $300? I'da been on it, too. Llama sold a gazillion guns back in the day.

                          Dunno if I'd be sinking any significant cash into it though.

                            Whats "significant"? $300 for the gun, $500 for the fun! $8 bills ain't to bad. I'd blow that on a weekend in Vegas. And I'll still have something to show for it.

                              Funny, I worked at Turners in the late 80's. Llama 1911 comes in for repair 1 out of 3, it would be more, but most people buy it for protection and dont shoot it enough to know if there is a problem.. gun manager loves it as they get $5 commision for everyone the dept sales.. total pc of you know what.. get an RIA
