Slide shape (some models), external extractor (all models)...

Oh, and 80s series vs. 70s series (all models) if that matters to you.

That's about it. And all Government size Sig 1911s (that I know of) are Stainless steel slide/frame/barrel.

Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

Keenkeen is correct. The differences aren't big. If you find a Sig you like don't hold back. To me they shoot like other 1911s in the same price range.

Sig is 80s series which has an added internal safety (blocks the firing pin).

Bingo...Many think they are a great value in the 1911 platform if you can find them at a dealer with good pricing.

The XO model I had used the 80 series firing pin safety but that was easy to remove.

biggest thing is the external extractor, which some people complain isn't true to Brownings design. Never shot a 1911 with an external extractor myself, but I've heard that they can be problematic.

At a gun show I went to this weekend I didn't really like them (well, I did, except for...) because the grip safety comes to a sharp point and irritated my hand.

External extractor is the main mechanical difference. I've shot one that belonged to someone else, but wouldn't buy one because of the external extractor. If I want a Sig in .45 I'll get a P220

I bought a Kimber with internal extractor instead.

A well designed external extractor is an improvement on the "traditional" 1911 design.

Some agree, some disagree, most who disagree cannot tell you any "real" reason why...

They just say EEs are are "BAD"...when pressed they will just start saying they are not traditional.

I have the sig xo and the external extractor works great. It runs just as good as my kimber custom 1.
