    9 days left....

regardless of being relatively new on this forum, i still needed to share my excitement with you guys...my wife and family (for some odd reason) dont seem to share in my content and rejoicing...

so I finally got my Springfield Armory XD .45 ACP and my 10 day wp started yesterday at 5pm, with pick up set for the 29th at 5pm....I'm just hopping i make it to the range before they close that day.

with that being said, anyone got some friendly advice for me on the XD platform?
this will be my first XD and would sure appreciate any pointers (i.e. type of ammo to run through it, special maintenance tricks, etc.).
i am comfortable with handling a .45, however my only experience is on a EAA Witness-P, which is MUCH different than the XD.

    cheers,
If you suck with irons you will suck with optics. The difference is the aimpoint will allow you to suck faster and a scope will give you a closer look at how much you suck.
AR's have finally become full blown "men's barbie dolls" now with fashion accessories.

Congrats, don't shoot SWC's through it.

          I feel your pain... really.

I have Two bundles of Liberty due the 29th as well.

Any jacketed ball will due, preferably inexpensive reloads.

Clean it, grease it, and shoot the crap out of it.

After 150 rounds or so, start rotating in some of your Carry/SD ammo. (I like the HST 230 gr. +P )

Don't forget to dry-fire at least twice as much b/t range trips to improve technique and smooth out the trigger.

Let Freedom ring. (next time it will wear ear protection)

I probably wouldn't dry fire that XD much without a snap cap in it. Dry firing on am empty chamber causes the striker to slam against the striker retaining pin and doing so a decent amount of times will run the risk of breaking that pin. Of course, it can easily be removed and replaced with a stronger one (from PRP, for instance) but it's best just to dry fire with a snap cap.

I don't know if I 'buy' this. Dry firing is required to break the gun down as per the manual...

Congrats! I really enjoy my XD-45 and I'm sur you will too. You'd think going through the 10 day silly wait would get easier over time, but it doesn't.

Snap caps=good, your pin will want to hit something, and the caps do that. They have a small hard piece of rubber that the pin strikes safely... if there is nothing to hit the pin keeps traveling until it does, causing unneeded ware and tare..

                  Why risk it?

Number one reason "dry firing " is bad:

The 10000 rounds of ammo you have in your garage just waiting to be shot. Screw dry firing. Shoot the hell out of that weapon.

Well it's an old topic that has been discussed in length on the XD forums. I think the consensus is that the amount of dry firing it takes to break the pin varies, but if you are planning on repeatedly dry firing then you might as well just buy a snap cap.

As far as disassembling the gun...Yes you have to pull the trigger but you do so with the take-down level upwards which causes the slide to jump forward after the trigger is pulled. I would think this obviously prevents the striker from hitting the pin that hard (if at all) like it would when you are dry firing.

my choices were between the XD .45 and the XD 9mm, however i was unable to financially factor in the 9mm at the time and lucky for me the XD .45 presented itself my way via a trade...(had some family emergencies come up recently and they really interfered with the 'gun fund').

i still wish i would have gone the 9mm road, due to ammo cost, but i think things worked themselves out in a favorable way.
