44 special outdated

I love my .44 Special. I have it all tricked out with an action job, ebony grips, I polished the exterior and then I installed a 14k gold bead front sight.

My normal loads are a 240gr LSWC at 750-800fps and for "defense" l loaded some 240gr LSWC's that are pushed at about 1,000fps.

Some of the full service gun shops carry some lead 44 Spl for cowboy shooters. They are not full power, but keep the brass because you can have somebody reload them for you for a lot less than the $30 per box they cost new.

I still enjoy the special even though it costs about the same to reload light 44 magnums. Even better to have a true dedicated 44 Spl only revolver because the bullet doesn't have to jump a large cylinder gap like when you shoot them out of 44mag guns.

Could be worse, I have a .45 GAP and ammo for that is getting hard to come by.

At the very least, you can re-use the brass once you start reloading.

I know there is striped ebony that will show some different colors, but that looks an awful lot like Cocobolo.

Its the flash, the grips are darker than in the picture. Cocobolo usually has more color, red, redish brown, maroon even blood red, and some yellow.


I looked at Midway USA last night and they had many .44 Special offerings from many manufacturers that ranged from about $22 to $49 per box of 50.

Yeah, You're right, they're no good. Send me 50 bucks and I'll take it off your hands...... orrrrrr there must be some gun shows up in liberal San Jose somewhere.... may have to drive a bit. The 44 is a good cartridge- makes a big hole! We use them a lot in SASS- Cowboy shooting. Do a google on gun shows in your area. Here are a couple:

I just bought a used taurus revolver 44 special not knowing too much on revolver ammo. After my ten days I picked it up. I then tried to find the ammo at Walmart. No luck so I look elsewhere. Everybody is out. Did I buy a bad pistol that is outdated because of the ammo. Am I ***** out of luck, Is that caliber not so good. Thanks for the info.

44 spl is an excellent round. If you are in OC or nearby, drop me a pm. I have plenty and wouldn't mind selling you some.

My next concealment pistol, if only I had spare money, would be a .44SPL 5-round snubby. That'd get their attention.

For "standard" defense loads, I've been carrying Federal's LSWCHP and Double Tap's load.

And I still carry a .44 Special at times in town. Powerwise, the .44 Special is about the same as a .45ACP, which is generally accepted without any problems.

One advantage of a pistol chambered in Special vs Magnum is that the politics in some places can give you grief for carrying the Magnum. By carrying a Special, well - magnums won't even fit in your pistol, no way will they fit.
