Post up a serial number and I can tell you. You can omit the last two digits if you want.

    Example: S 123456
    Post: S 1234XX

      Hi

You can start by providing more info like model # (if any), finish, barrel length, type of grips, number of rounds the revolver holds, fixed sights or adjustable sights, numbers & a letter (if present) on butt of frame, numbers / letters on side of barrel plus any other location on the revolver, any known history and of course pics are great.

Allot of talent available on the forum but more info is needed. Thanks.

I just call smith and wesson. Customer service is very helpful and will be more than happy to tell you anything they have on file about your pistol.

Try the bottom of the grip frame; I do believe that's just an assembly number. The J-Frame yoke is too small for the full serial number.

I have a perfect Burning Man attendance record: zero.

You do know there are more guns in the country than there are in the city.

Well it's pre 1982 (delete pinned barrel). Serial number (on butt of frame hidden under those early Pachmayar Compac grips) should start with an "R" .

Post the serial number and x out the last two digits.

                Example R 1234xx.

While somewhat expensive at $29, the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson is a reference book for the ages for handgun collectors. I probably refer to and enjoy it more than any other gun book that I have. Not suggesting it for the OP if its only for one revolver, but if you like S&W's you'll enjoy the book and be able to identify most years of production.

I used the book to identify a revolver at a local auction and ended up picking up an excellent condition pre-27 5" barrel 5 screw for $325.00.

"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"
