New M&P40

Finally had the chance to break in my new M&P40 today (yesterday, since it is early a.m.). I love this pistol! This is my first M&P and my first .40. I am glad I went with this instead of a new G23 or even a 9 mm (Glock or M&P were my brands of choice for this purchase). I have a lot of shooting to do as I am not proficient enough with it. However, I am very pleased so far. Only did 200 rounds with it (cleaned after each 100). So far, so good. Tried out 2 different types of ammo. Mywall for the first 100 and Tul Ammo for the second hundred. Mywall ammo is fantastic and very clean. The Tul Ammo rounds were dirty, but did its job. No problems with either ammo as far as FTF or FTE.

The trigger reset is hard to feel but it is not something I will change anytime soon. I will keep on shooting as is for now. No complaints at all. Just need to keep on shooting. Next range trip, I plan to try some Federal ammo and some Winchester ammo. I will also have to shoot my Win Ranger ammo to get a feel for it as it is my SD round.

Any M&P40 owners have bad experiences with this pistol? Any suggestions for improving the pistol functionality? I plan to take a pistol course to better my skills. Just have to take the time and money to do so.

APEX Tactical makes an upgrade trigger set for the M&P line of pistols.

When you go back to the range, try this. When you go to reload a new full magazine, as in a combat reload, try inserting the magazine with moderate force. Tell us what happens.

I love my M&P40's onw has the apex duty carry kit and the other doesn't. When you are ready and have the extra $$ the apex kit may be something you want to consider.

And another cost saving tip, you can get the factory 9mm barrel from midway for $80 ish and some 9mm mags and shoot 9mm out of the gun.
I guess that's not much of a "cost saving tip" but its just another option.

Congrats on your new M&P, you should be happy with it, it's a great gun.

I've had an M&P .40c for several years, and love it as much now as the day I got it. No issues with it ever. Interestingly, I shoot better with it than with two other, full-size and all metal .40s I have. You'll have to try the compact sometime.

I've heard nothing but great things about the APEX upgrade, and intend to do it one day.

I want an M&P 40c but decided to wait till they start making them with the Shield style trigger. The reset on it is supposed to be very good.

Thank you all for the good feedback and advice. The LGS I bought the pistol from suggested the APEX RAM modification straight away. I declined as I had never shot one. I just told them I would shoot first and get a good feel for it before making adjustments.

I will definitely have to check out what happens when I do a combat style reload => in this sentiment, I did notice, with a full mag and slide closed, the mag does not want to go in all the way. It is something I left alone and did not force the mag in. It feels like something like a safety mechanism is stopping the mag from seating into the well. Is this normal?

I think I used the wrong term. By "Combat Load", I should have said, "loading from an empty magazine and loading a new magazine using moderate force. Like you would be doing in a combat stressful situation."

I bought an M&P45 last year. Loved the gun. Comfortable, accurate and a soft shooter. What I didn't like was the Auto Forward. Every time I would load a new magazine, with an open slide, the slide would slam forward by itself. Even with a slight to moderate force. It's been discussed before here and other S&W sites. Some say its a feature. Some say its a defect. Some like it, some don't. I didn't. Not the way I've been trained and shoot. Eventually sold the gun and went with....you guessed it.....a Glock21.

^^^What you describe above is normal. You have a full magazine and the magazine spring is at its maximum compression. You might need to give a little nudge to get it to latch. Someone else correct me if I'm wrong.

Polish the feed ramp, my m&p40 eats anything thanks to the feed ramps being polish.

I just fired my M&P 9c for the first time today. I really like it. Despite the heavy trigger, it's still smooth (I've read that some feal "gritty") and I was able to get some good groups. The one thing I don't like is that the slide release won't release the slide unless you slightly pull back on the slide. Looks like maybe I could just take the sharp edge off the catch a little and maybe it would help. Anyone else have this problem?

Mine is stiff. It can take some effort to push down on the release button. However, I chalk it up to being new. I expect it to "break in" and smooth out as you use the handgun more. Also, I was trained to never rely on the slide release button. i always pull the slide back to chamber the round or close the slide.

Same here, shot my 9c last week for the first time, experienced the same as you.
I think it might be because of pressure from the slide riding against slide release. I'll live with it for awhile to see if it improves. Then modify if needed.

The Apex Ram Kit is worth it if you want to here and feel the reset, I have one in my full size.40. I think the ram kit is about $23.
