Well i have a Ruger SBH 7 1/2 .44 magnum, This is my first revolver ever, never shot one before. So anyways, I've been getting stinged by bullet fragments. I'm using LAX reloads. The last one cut me on my nose. Another time, my friend that was standing behind me, got some on his wrist. Is this normal? does it have to do with the cylinder timing?

Sounds like timing. I'm having a tough time understanding fragments blowing that far back. Usually blows to side. Going back to Ruger yes?"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

I was using jacketed bullets, and when the fragment hit my face. I found the copper jacketing fragment.Comment

lack of quality control for basic issues from even respected big name
gun makers never ceases to amaze me.
Is it that they can't find any guys who want to play with(test) new guns?
Do these gun makers need more adult supervision, like from Obama and Holder, and be required to label their "new" guns as "kits requiring further work from the purchaser".
Do gun makers need to be required to do certain government mandated tests before shipping, like putting more than one round through, and even rounds of the most common types, and checking for things like frags?Comment

The gun is also from 1970ish. i used hot loads before and regular loads. It could just be from the LAX reload, i had a couple of rounds with to much copper jacketing.Comment

I'd try shooting it with a factory load and see if she still spits crap...
Failing that, have a qualified gunsmith check endshake and cylinder gap and timing. I would also check cylinder bore diameters v. bullet diameters.
Lots of info by googling "ruger blackhawk cylinder clearance"

I'd bet the spitting lead is rebounding off the sidewalls of the range booth, and that if
you were shooting outside it'd not be (as) noticeable [but still indicating a problem or
even dangerous condition.]
DO NOT SHOOT THIS GUN UNTIL IT'S BEEN SEEN BY A SMITH.
Still, this is a timing issue. I'd bet someone did a lot of cylinder spinning in its past and when
the cylinder stopped the full mass of it was stopped by the little cylinder stop that pops up from
the bottom of the frame in cylinder window and which engages the notches on the cylinder.
[These latter notches could also be worn as well, but the cylinder stop is the first part that should
be replaced, along with validation that this action gets it back in "proper time".] Cylinder notches
worn? Perhaps a good smith could uniform them somehow, or just get a new cylinder and install it.
This could also occur because someone replaced a cylinder somehow. Ruger does not like to sell
cylinders to non-gunsmiths due to folks not checking timing (or being able to fix it if off). I believe
Ruger SA cylinders for dual-cylinder guns (45Colt+45ACP, 357+9mm, etc.) have the last 3 digits
of the serial# marked on one of the cylinder faces - perhaps all "cylinders sold with a gun" actually
are so marked - see if the cylinder has these digits and see if it matches with those of the gun's
serial#.Last edited by bwiese; 10-09-2012, 10:54 AM.

you seem to be saying that the LAX reloads, are the only ones doing this. if so, you might take a micrometer, and check the bullets diameter, vs, other rounds that you have shot. if not, follow the other suggestions. That may be a CG first!
