Unfluted cylinder is heavier, and combined with that fat muzzle brake it should lower recoil by quite a bit.

Here was my thinking:
Wash: Muzzle energy of high-end 500 and 460 loads is comparable. Difference in bullet diameter and bullet constructions are minor. Everything else (inherent accuracy, how well are the guns constructed) is also extremely similar.
Pro 500: Much better selection of loads, maybe even at lower cost. Better selection of guns.
Pro 460: Can use .45LC and .454Casull loads, for inexpensive plinking, or when you want less recoil.

Please note the insanity: Using .454 Casull and "inexpensive plinking" and "less recoil" in one sentence.

I had the S&W PC 500 Hunter, with a 10 1/2" barrel, and ended up replacing it with the shorter .460. I found the 10 1/2" barrel too long for any offhand shooting, and, when combined with the heavy loads/recoil, less accurate after the first couple of shots.

The .460 seems to have a lot less recoil, and I can actually sight it in without whimpering. Add to that the superior ballistics with the .460 for 150-200 yard shots (where a lot of my hunting is done), and I'm still happy with my choice.

Nill grips? It's the first time I hear about them, the do look good but how about performance? I would think that the original Hogue grips are a lot more comfortable, right?

Had a chance to use my brothers 8&3/8 i got to tell you it was not the most enjoyable thing ive shot. We were shooting some 300 gr my brother loaded up at 25 yards, i usualy keep them in the black at that distance but i could only manage a 3 shot groupe with 2 just out side the black. Its deffently not somthing you shoot all day, but it really has a place in my book for hunting. we shot it at some steel targets i have set up at 175 yards and it shot extreemly flat and true, it is for sure something you got to practice with alot a defenit reloaders gun. I have the 7.5-inch PC version. Here is a photo of it when it arrived:



Considering the work done to the PC versions, such as an outstanding trigger, it is a bargain. I mounted a scope (a Leupold FX-II 4x28) last weekend, using Warne Maxima rings. It's almost ready to enjoy.

In terms of a hunting load, the new Hornady 300gr Evolution (the third one, from the left, shown in the photo above), would be an outstanding choice.

I want the exact same setup but for the Model 500 with the 4" barrel, all black with the same cylinder in the picture. I called up S&W and they would not help me...

Any ideas how I could get this done?

I have the 8" model, got it at Turners once the 500 was approved for PRK. It's only had about 30 rounds through it.

I can say that while recoil is HEAVY, it is smooth. My .480 Ruger (Super Redhawk, 7.5") on the other hand, while lighter recoiling, has a much sharper biting recoil, making it more uncomfortable to shoot than the .500 .

Shoot it Ok I couldnt resist the smart a** comment. No I was looking at this thread and remembered I saw one with a 10.5" barrel and I was thinking to myself that I might need it (just to have).
