    How to remove/prevent rust?

There is an old handgun in my family that has started to rust a bit. On the top part of the slide theres a tiny glob of corrosion. I've tried to remove it by scrubbing with cloth and breakfree, but no luck. I obviously dont want to take steel wool to it. What can I do to remove the existing rust and prevent it from spreading?
    Thanks

ps: this thread is NOT useless without pics!

Motor oil and #0000 steel wool.
Alot isn't a word and allot isn't the word you think it is.

I'd really like a Colt 1903 frame, bad finish okay!
I'm also looking for a good deal on a 1911 frame or two for budget/spare parts builds.

its a tiny 25 auto, I think its a bernardelli. The steel is bluish/black.

brass or copper brush lubricated with breakfree should do it without harming most finishes.

Try evaporust. In restoring an old lathe, I've used this stuff on many parts. It works real well without discoloring the material or any existing finish. I don't know if it would affect blueing, but it might be worth a try.

It will probably take off any blueing.

thanks for the advice everyone. I'll give the copper brush a shot, if that doesn't work i'll probably buy a bottle of that rust formula.

Don't use Naval Jelly! I'm pretty sure that'll eat through bluing. It ate through the finish on my SKS's receiver.

Isn't the blued finish technically rust?

In a matter of speaking. It is a form of oxidization.
