    Split, stuck casing

I took my super cheap, boat anchor, friends laugh at Hi Point .380 (and even it's brother 9MM) out to shoot today. The focus was on the M1 Garand, but I wanted something to do while resting my shoulder.

I was using Winchester white box 100 pack from Wal-Mart. Only shot about 35 rounds. I had two casing split and get stuck in the barrel. Luckily I had a plastic rod to push them back out. (pics soon)

Curious to see if this is the fault of the cheap factory ammo, or the gun that everyone I know hates?

    Thoughts?

BTW - I still say that when the SHTF, those Hi Points will be worth their weight in franks and beans.

I'm betting on the ammo. I've seen plenty of WWB fail in different ways. If the gun has functioned fine in the past, I doubt it's the problem. Then again, I've worked at a range and seen more than a few problems with all makes of factory ammo. But, if you want to listen to the earlier posters, I'll offer you $50 (plus my $35 DROS) for your "broken gun" sight unseen. I'd offer you more but, I already have one that I paid $90 OTD for and don't need anotherone enough to pay more than that for it.

Oh, it's ugly, but nearly new and not for sale. Other than numerous failure to feed properly issues, it has shot fine the few times I have had it out. The Calgunner I bought it from said it never gave him any problems.

This was a fresh box of ammo, bought and opened today. I have ran about 100-150 rounds through since I've owned it and never had a casing split. I don't recall what the previous ammo was. I don't really track that stuff.

I also don't have the skills, tools or even a clue on how to check the barrel specs. I know how to keep it clean and that's about my limit.

I do know how to send it back if need be.

You just wait - when the zombies are at the door these Hi Points will be better than gold trading to someone with no gun at all. It's my version of "investing".

Is the case split lengthwise or did it rupture around the base? Lots of white box ammo has had case head issues.

Take pics of the casings, and the unused portion of the box (if any) and send them to Winchester with LOT# and MFR date codes, see what they say. (with luck you might get MFR coupon for free ammo)

Are you sure that it's really a .380?

What is the diameter of the split cases?

                        What does the barrel say?

Wow, sure looks like the chamber is too big. Hard to tell looking at the pic on the phone, will a 9x19 fit?

It has only done this with this box of ammo. The other ammo I used never had this problem. The previous owner said this never happened to him.
