Is there anyway around the whole 21 years of age to purchase and own a handgun? can it be handed down to you from a family member?

... I don't think that's a way around it. You still need the HSC to receive a handgun from your (grand)father.

nvm, you only need to be 18 to get the HSC, tho' many places may not let you take it if you're under 21.

You can own a handgun at 18 years old.

Get a Handgun Safety Certificate. Have an in-state parent (father OR mother) or grandparent to purchase and gift it to you.

Send CA DOJ the intrafamilial transfer form for the transfer of the handgun (found on BOF website) along with $19 for registration.

"Straw purchases" are meant to hide the true identity of the firearms purchaser or owner. If your 18 year old is identified to DOJ as the new owner after you buy it, there's no intent to hide anything from DOJ.

My son just got out of Marine boot camp. I want him to shoot more handgun before he returns for training at the School of Infantry. While I hadn't thought of buying him his own handgun, I am glad to see that at age 18 he can take one of my handguns to the range.

Now maybe I should buy one and later transfer it to him, too.....

There was a debate about this on another forum. The opinion there was that if you hand your parents money, they buy the pistol, and then PPT it to you, it's a straw purchase. If they buy the pistol, then immediately PPT it to you, it's a legal gift. Sounds like a matter of intent.

A straw purchase is one where the ultimate owner's information is shielded by using an intermediary purchaser.

In this case the firearm is purchased by the parent or grandparent (registered to them) then passed to the child or grandchild who then sends paperwork on the transfer to DOJ (registering it to them).

This is not a straw purchase as the ultimate owner's identity is NOT hidden in any way. Please look into what a straw purchase is before you accuse me of advocating a felonious act.

There is always someone who says this when talking about this topic. It never fails. It is not illegal in any way to have your dad buy a handgun legally in his name and then transfer it to a person under 21 with the correct paperwork filled out.

To the OP, I also am under 21 and own a handgun through an intra-familial transfer. I havent found the ammo thing to be an issue either.
